Bitter Fruit: A Novel, by Achmat Dangor

With the publication of Kafka's Curse, Achmat Dangor established himself as an utterly singular voice in South African fiction. His new novel, a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the IMPAC-Dublin Literary Award, is a clear-eyed, witty, yet deeply serious look at South Africa's political history and its damaging legacy in the lives of those who live there. The last time Silas Ali encountered Lieutenant Du Boise, Silas was locked in the back of a police van and the lieutenant was conducting a vicious assault on Silas's wife, Lydia, in revenge for her husband's participation in Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. When Silas sees Du Boise by chance 20 years later, as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is about to deliver its report, crimes from the past erupt into the present, splintering the Alis' fragile peace. Meanwhile Silas and Lydia's son, Mikey, a thoroughly contemporary young hip-hop lothario, contends in unforeseen ways with his parents' pasts. A harrowing story of a brittle family on the crossroads of history and a fearless skewering of the pieties of revolutionary movements, Bitter Fruit is a cautionary tale of how we do, or do not, address the past's deepest wounds.

Searing Account of Racially Driven Conflicts Within a Post-Apartheid Family
By Ed Uyeshima
Author Achmat Dangor has given me a penetrating look at post-apartheid South Africa that I could not possibly get from a newscast. His superb novel resonates deeply with the legacy of racism that lingers well after official policies have supposedly liberated all of the country's residents. Dangor is intimate with the subject of apartheid as he worked to defeat it there and then participated in the slow process of rebuilding after the African National Congress came to power. He divides the book into three parts - Memory, Confession and Retribution - which suggests what direction the book will go, but it's a surprising and involving journey every step of the way.

The focal point of the novel is Silas Ali, a former political activist who has joined the new government as a lawyer working with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He lives with his wife, Lydia, a nurse, and their grown son, Mikey, in a township near Johannesburg. There is an inherent irony to their existence - Silas works with the government agency that grants amnesty to those who committed crimes under the old regime, but he and his family remain traumatized by the one hate crime that happened to them. It involves a twenty-year old rape and the sudden reappearance of the perpetrator, a white policeman named François du Boise. Much like Andre Dubus circles the dramatic wagons in his short story collection of revenge and retribution, "In the Bedroom", Dangor does a masterful job in building the tension within the family. Silas doesn't confront du Boise, so the much needed cathartic release is instead directed at the family, triggering a chain of events that leads to its disintegration.

The sharply observed narrative carefully interweaves the differing perspectives of Silas and Lydia. Whereas Silas is deadened by his own stoic resignation of what occurred so long ago in the past, Lydia's suffering is far more intense as she irrevocably retreats into herself. The irony is that there is no truth and reconciliation at home as Silas continues to fulfill the concept at a national level. The unfinished business between Silas and Lydia is palpable and ultimately shattering in bearing the "bitter fruit" of the title. Caught in the middle literally is their psychologically conflicted son Mikey, who has internalized his parents' pain. As he relives the past through his mother's diary, he finds out revelations which make him feel more emotionally detached than he is but subsequently lead him to take matters into his own hands. Dangor provides such vivid detail in his account that it's hard to put down.

Fairly torturous read
By pleureur.
The book has an interesting premise: what happens when a man who was witness to his wife's rape runs into the rapist in a grocery store? How does this chance encounter affect the amnesia of convenience that has been created in the intervening 20 years?

What we get instead is a smorgasbord, as there isn't much that doesn't find its way into "Bitter Fruit": rape, recovery from rape, memory, differing perceptions of the same even, incest (three different ways), police brutality, gun violence, marital tensions, biracial people, racial tensions, angst about identity, nature vs. nurture, religious confusion, unwanted children, and, to top it all off, mysterious Muslim men with an unclear agenda, until reading starts to become painful. The book is more indigestible than bitter. It's simply too much.

The ever-turning wheel of history
By Luan Gaines
As a young man, Silas Ali is a member of Nelson Mandela's African National Congress, but Silas' wife, Lydia, is unaware of the degree of his commitment. Early in their marriage, Lydia is raped by Lieutenant DuBoise, an Afrikaans officer who takes her with impunity before her helpless husband. Such atrocities are commonplace at that time, but the event remains a personal shame until twenty years later, when Silas encounters DuBoise in the street.

South Africa is now awaiting the results of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, an attempt to make peace with the brutal excesses of the country's past. The chance meeting with DuBoise stirs up years of anguish and resentment for Silas and Lydia, throwing their troubled marriage into stark relief before their extended family, but especially their son, 19-year old Mikey. Used to his parents' lack of communication and marital idiosyncrasies, Mikey secretly reads his mother's diary, which holds stunning revelations, a shocking truth that will shake the foundations of Mikey's world.

Silas has the task of informing Lydia that DuBoise has requested a public apology before the Commission and has named her as one of his victims. Although Lydia begs her husband to stop DuBoise, Silas cannot and their lives are clouded by this knowledge. Lydia watches as her husband becomes even more isolated, her son more distant: "She sees in Mikey an enslavement to another, more puritanical God: his will." For his part, Mikey dismisses the older generation, with their need for "legacy", envisioning themselves as "heroes in the struggle". The nature of betrayal is exposed, leaving Silas, Lydia and Michael without framework as the past turns against the future, the truth destructive, shattering the fragile walls of family.

Towards the end of the novel, Michael is told the story of his grandfather, a harrowing tale set in motion when the British occupied India, forcing European values upon their subjects, the seed of resentment planted in the early days of Imperialism. Much of the chaos unleashed has been years in the making. A product of the new South Africa, Michael reaches for the roots of his Muslim past, bringing him face to face with murder, both a personal and generational vengeance. The family, divided by self-interests, is a reflection of the country, factions oblivious to common ground.

The novel is perfectly written, emotionally spare, yet with a subtle intensity that unveils the secret shame and hidden truths complicated by corrupt politics and the betrayals of power. Each character startles awake, as if from a long dream, able to survive only in another, freer identity. The true nature of change is abundantly clear and the enormous price it exacts. Dangor's story is personal, a reenactment of a familiar tragedy. Indeed, in his novel "rape is a metaphor for the abuse of ordinary people in South Africa." In a world defined by Apartheid, newly released from its constrictions only to be cast into the nightmare of the AIDS epidemic, there is no voice for the anguish of imposed silence, many driven to act out their repressed memories. Beautifully understated, Bitter Fruit is a life-changing exercise of integrity and courage. Luan Gaines/2005.

The Keeper: A Life of Saving Goals and Achieving Them, by Tim Howard

In this inspiring, down-to-earth memoir the revered goalkeeper and American icon  idolized by millions worldwide for his dependability, daring, and humility recounts his rise to stardom at the 2014 World Cup, the psychological and professional challenges he has faced, and the enduring faith that has sustained him.

In The Keeper, the man who electrified the world with his amazing performance in Brazil does something he would never do on a soccer field: he drops his guard. As fiercely protective about his privacy as he is guarding the goal on the field, Howard opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid from New Jersey with Tourette’s syndrome defied the odds to become one of the world’s premier goalkeepers.

The Keeper recalls his childhood, being raised by a single mother who instilled in him a love of sports and a devout Christian faith that helped him cope when he was diagnosed with Tourette’s in the fifth grade. He looks back over his fifteen-year professional career—from becoming the youngest player to win MLS Goalkeeper of the Year to his storied move to the English Premier League with Manchester United and his current team, Liverpool’s Everton, to becoming an overnight star after his record-making performance with the United States Men’s National Team. He also talks about the things closest to his heart—the importance of family and the Christian beliefs that guide him.

Told in his thoughtful and articulate voice, The Keeper is an illuminating look at a remarkable man who is an inspirational role model for all of us.

The Keeper is illustrated with two 8-page color photo inserts.

Review
“Thanks to its honesty, The Keeper is one of the best sports memoirs I’ve read recently.” (Daily Beast)

“Inspiring and compulsively readable.” (People Magazine)

From the Back Cover

In the summer of 2014, Tim Howard became an overnight sensation after more than ten years as one of America's leading professional soccer players. His record-breaking fifteen saves for the United States national team against Belgium in the World Cup electrified a nation that had only recently woken up to the Beautiful Game after decades of hibernation.

An estimated TV audience of 21 million viewers in the United States watched Howard's heroic performance against the heavily favored Belgians in which he repelled shots with his hands, feet, legs, knees, and even his signature long beard. In this inspiring and candid memoir, the beloved U.S. and Everton goalkeeper opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid with Tourette's syndrome from New Jersey defied the odds to become one of the greatest American keepers in history. The Keeper is also a chronicle of the personal sacrifices Howard's made for his career, including the ultimate dissolution of his marriage and its most painful consequence: separation from his two children.

The Keeper will captivate soccer fans and readers who are unfamiliar with the sport but want to know what makes a world-class athlete different from the rest of us—and where that difference gives way to common ground.

Some reviews are critical of the use of sports jargon in the book. To that I say this is an AUTO-biographical work written by an athlete.

As to the narrative itself, it is honest and inspirational. I've been a Tim Howard fan since his Metrostars days. I remember the pride of learning a US soccer player had been picked up by Manchester United (the New York Yankees of soccer). I watched all 15 saves in the 2014 World Cup, and doubt I will ever get over that loss. With all that said, I picked up this book mostly curious as to how Howard had suffered from and managed his Tourette's Syndrome. Simply put, I'm now more impressed with the man than the goalkeeper.

Great read. I literally couldn't put my Kindle down and now I really need to get to bed.

Fantastic!!!

A beautiful blend of transparency and humility. Tim Howard's story is one for all American soccer fans- beautiful insight from his greatest struggle to his rise to fame. The best part being his honest account of his struggles with TS, his fears of failure, and his realization that his marriage had ended. What an endearing ending, which looks to be really the beginning of the best years of his life. Bravo!

Quick and easy read, and ah yes, that Belgium-USA WC game!
By Paul Allaer
"The Keeper - A Life of Savings Goals and Achieving Them" (2014 publication; 318 pages) is the memoir from US soccer goalie Tim Howard, who made World Cup history last summer when he made a WC record 15 saves in that epic Round of 16 elimination match again Belgium (more on that later). Not unpredictably, the book is structured in four parts which all start off with a reflection on that game against Belgium (Pregame; Warning Shots; Nothing Gets Through; Still Alive). Otherwise it is a straight-forward, chronological memoir, from his early days in New Jersey (or "Jersey" as he calls it), rising through the ranks in the US, to then break through as a 24 yr. old in the English Premier League. Frankly, he has been at Everton for so many years that I had forgotten he actually started out his first 3 seasons in t EPL at Man United.

As to the book itself, this is very easy and quick reading. Even though it's a bit over 300 pages, I blew through this in a single afternoon recently (while having EPL games on the telly).

As to Tim's comments on the Belgium game, he says time and again "I believe that we will win", and certainly his performance isn't the reason why ultimately Team USA did not beat Belgium. Being a dual citizen of both Belgium (where I grew up) and the US (where I've lived 30+ years), you can only imagine how conflicted my feelings were about this game. In the end, the most important thing is that this was probably the most enetertaining match of last year's entire World Cup, where each team gave their all, and then some. I look forward to having Tim Howard be the goalkeeper for Team USA for a few more years, maybe even to the next WC. If you are a football fan (and you know who you are), you will enjoy this book from start to finish.

By N. C. Moore
Briskly paced, exciting read. The scope of Luther's life is staggering. Should he not be considered the most influential figure of the last two millennia? I find it truly fantastic that God used a single man to up-end the religious, economic, social, and even artistic, climates of Europe. What remained untouched?

This is a good read. Though the first Lutheran biography I've read, I'm a little surprised at how highly this work is praised. Many other biographies that I've read are styled and narrated better. Perhaps this is because to understand Luther you must understand the development of Luther's thought worldview before you consider any of his life's consequences. Luther is ever quotable and thankfully Bainton doesn't shy away from a modest number of quotes including excerpts from sermons and Table Talk. The biography is generally balanced considering its only a 400 page book. Luther was a complex man, mostly balanced but not without contradiction. This biography takes on the same sense of proportion. Like most biographers, Bainton seems eager to praise and quick to move past shortcomings.

"Here I Stand" highlights the man's theology and his passion for truth yet Bainton doesn't to show the reader the trailheads of all that the Reformation brought about. At the end of the book the reader is treated to brief sections on Luther's preaching, his hymns, his prayers and his depression.

At times, I found Bainton's writing style a bit bland. Lutheran quotations provided frequent relief. In the hardback Hendrickson edition, more than 50 illustrations are included and serve to compliment rather than distract from the author's ideas.

The Reformation is nothing less than a rediscovery of the Bible and the Gospel. Luther is nothing less than the Father of the Reformation. This is a good book of a great man.

An excellent read
By H.E.
First of all, the seller shipped this book to me quickly. It arrived in excellent shape and except for a little "yellowing" of the edges of the pages, it was in perfect condition for something printed in the early 1950's. I was glad to read this book and I figure to do so once a year or so. You see, I owe Dr. Martin Luther a lot. I grew up in a very strict, Baptist home; keeping the rules was of the highest importance and we did so out of obligation. Later I was a student at Bob Jones University and they taught "keeping the rules", "Doing X-Y- and Z" in order to be right with God, but I began to realize from the study of scripture, exactly as did Martin Luther, that saving faith is a gift from God himself and not an achievement you can gain by carefully observing the rules. Sincerity and extra effort don't endear us to God at all. It takes a little while to un-learn what you've been taught for years, but thank the Lord he stayed with me and I can say now, as did Luther then, that the Christian life is simply a life lived in gratitude for what Christ has done for us - not for what we can do for ourselves. He took the penalty of our sins upon himself on the cross and we are declared "not-guilty" before God. That gift is ours by faith, which is relying on Christ's work - the faith that God gives us. What could be more simple yet so complex because it runs entirely counter to the way our human minds tend to work? Much of the work that Dr. Luther did was to preach, write and teach that we're made God's children - believers - by what Christ has done for us, without any help from us. Thank the Lord for his grace, for the life and testimony of Dr. Luther and for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The Lord's richest blessings to you.

The author is an excellent, eloquent
By despond
I learned much from this book. The author is an excellent, eloquent, and engaging writer. He is very objective and fair, for the most part. I admire Luther even more though i still dislike him for his treatment of the Anabaptists. I wish Luther would have been apolitical and just focused on doing God's work. The author does show that he did not like politics and for the most part, stayed out. But when he did, I believe, he failed.

E-Book Version 1 Star - Author & Good Books Publishing PLEASE FIX
By Amazon Customer
Great recipes - all the other reviews show that - the 1 stars is because of the Navigation experience of this e-book version which they sell. It's obvious no one at that publisher tried to ever "really" use this book in any kind of e-book reader device or tablet.

Unlike a real dead tree book which you can quickly thumb through and stop at a glance and continue until you find something you're looking for, on the e-book you can't do that in no easy way. You more or less have to go through each page looking for the recipes you want - 1400 OF THEM! Seriously!! The table of context of the E-book is set up in section - Beef, Pork, Chicken, things like that, but within those sections there are hundreds of recipes - which means you still have to go through them each one at a time. It's just a bad joke.

I use digital readers, and tablets for all my reading material becauses it is light to carry with me all the time when I need or want them. In the case with a recipe book it's great to have with you when you go shopping so you can make sure you buy all the ingredients you need for any recipe you decide on or, when you change your mind at the last minute. Of course you can set up something like bookmarks in the digital book reader for the recipes you want to save and use again, but finding those recipes in the first place is pretty much a horrible experience. LETS FACE IT, in the modern digital age where paper isn't being wasted there is no reason why the table of context of this book shouldn't have a collapsable table of context of the name of each recipe listed with a link to that page of the recipe in this ebook! (HINT HINT - ARE YOU LISTENING PHYLLIS PELLMAN GOOD & GOOD BOOKS PUBLISHING?) It would make all the difference in using this recipe book in a digital reader as a functional tool in everyday real life. Please consider making such changes - and this recipe book would easily be a 10 star book in a 5 star rating!

A little disappointed
By chubbycherub
When I saw that this cookbook had 1,400 recipes, I thought "HOW AMAZING!". When I rec'd the cookbook, however, I was quickly disappointed. While it, is helpful to see a suggested size of crock pot for each recipe, it is somewhat disappointing that many of the recipes call for Crock Pot inserts. They are pans designed to fit inside of your crock pot and we don't own any of those. The crock pot insert substitute they offer, is using a metal coffee container. I dont think I would enjoy placing something like that in my crock pot, it just seems so odd. Additionally, some of the recipes are extremely repetitive. I don't think a cook book needs 30 variations on how to make queso, for example, when really the ingredient variation is so slight, it should not call for an entirely new recipe. I also think that many of the recipes are, well, for lack of better words, lame. For example, there is a soup recipe that calls for a can of V-8 juice, a cup of chicken broth and a can of green beans. I thought it was a little odd that something like that would even count as a real recipe. There are many more examples of things like that as well, but I don't have time to write them all in this review!

At any rate, I think that if you are an experienced cook, or crock pot user, you would find the majority of this cook book a little juvenile. However, for someone who is not as experienced in cooking, they would probably enjoy it more. If you don't have cooking inserts for your crock pot, there are many recipes you won't be able to use, so I would remember to take that into consideration as well.

The Secret Symbols of the Dollar Bill, by David Ovason

If you think a dollar bill is most interesting for the cup of coffee it can buy, think again. . . .

Elements of the dollar's complex graphic design date back to the Founding Fathers, and most of us are unaware of its deeper meanings. Now an expert on arcane symbolism uncovers the fascinating secret meanings behind the design of the money we use every day.

In The Secret Symbols of the Dollar Bill, David Ovason explores the visual complexity and magic behind the world's most influential currency. Ovason contends that some of the Great Seal's symbols represent the principles of the young republic and that their origins were obscured over time. The dollar bill was more than just currency for our country -- it was structured in such a way to demonstrate the nation's place in the world and the classical roots of its fight for freedom.

Presented in a simple format and written with Ovason's trademark lively style, the book invites readers to take up a dollar bill and set off on a visual adventure. Readers will encounter dazzling explanations of the dollar bill's secret contents, from the symbols derived from the Great Seal through the extraordinary strands of numerology interwoven into its structure to surprising hidden alignments.

David Ovason is a recognized authority in the field of arcane symbolism. His research into the dollar bill reveals hidden biblical and classical references, as well as symbols derived from such societies as the Rosicrucians and Freemasons, both of which engage in esoteric thought. So reach into your wallet and prepare for a history lesson unlike any other.

The Most Profound Work On This Topic
By a mystery series reader
Having spent decades researching and depicting elements of America's Great Seal in my paintings and murals, and also writing and teaching about these symbols, I can say without question that David Ovason has created THE most profound work on this topic ever to see the light of day. His scholarship and genius in The Secret Symbols of the Dollar Bill are unparalleled in this most under-appreciated and misunderstood area of America's history and meaning. It has shed great light on the deeper mysteries of America's spirit and destiny and the New Order of the Ages.

Ovason is an excellent scholar and does not present speculation as fact. When he is not 100% sure of something, he tells you, which is greatly appreciated.

Among other things, this book will tell you in what ways Sir Francis Bacon's New Atlantis was linked to the colonization of America... What magical symbols are found on the dollar bill... The origin of the word dollar... The origin of the symbol for the dollar... How the original dollar name can be linked with a holy number... Whether the dollar symbol was derived from astrology... Who were the Freemasons that designed the dollar bill of 1935... Why the eye in the triangle in the dollar bill was changed from a right eye to a left eye... The origin of America's name and why the letter A is among the most magical of all letters.

Did the designers and proposers of these magical symbols know what they were doing? Were they aware of their magical content? Read this book and decide for yourself.

Good, but left me very disappointed
By John W. Petersen
I got this book through interlibrary loan at my public library, and I was very excited to read it, since I have recently become quite interested in arcane symbolism. I understood Ovason was an expert in the field, so I had quite high expectations for this book . . . and unfortunately, it just didn't meet them.

Though he made some neat points here and there, his writing style was generally bland and uninviting. The majority of the symbolic interpretations seemed forced and mundane, at best. And like another reviewer pointed out: the more I read, the more I couldn't shake the feeling that this may have been done on purpose, as if to divert people's attention from the real, deeper meanings behind the symbolism. I would certainly encourage people to read it for themselves and reach their own conclusions. After all, it was not a bad book. It just left me very disappointed.

A fascinating little book-like to see an expanded edition
By Ronda L. Burkindine-tiffany
Get out your magnifying glass and a dollar bill and have some fun. David Ovason has succeeded in setting forth many strange and wondrous facts about the "ordinary" U.S. dollar bill. There is indeed a lot of amazing symbolism and numerology, much of it Masonic or perhaps Rosicrucian, on this Federal Reserve Note (by the way, I have to point out that the Fed Bank is privately owned, a fact omitted by Ovason). The author seems not to know that the Masons are anti-Christian; he never mentions the Rosicrucians (who are pro-Christian), but finds the magical number 33 in several places on the dollar bill, which corresponds with the number of years Jesus is said to have lived on Earth. Occasionally he fails to follow through on some of his discoveries; for example, so what if there are 55 dots and 25 lines in the "glory" surrounding the "constellation" over the eagle on the obverse? Ovason does not point out the numerological significance, if there is any, to 55 and 25. An oddity is that in item 30, on page 37, he mentions the official design for the national flag to have 13 stars, and yet the book is illustrated on this page with a flag of 12 stars. Then, the idea that the constellation Lyra, the Lyre, somehow represents America is questionable; since Lyra in fact has only 10 stars (although Ovason never mentions this fact). Some of his straightedge tricks, on page 75 e.g., do not seem to work out in the real world. He makes an interesting point or two that tend to confirm that the numerology was deliberately designed into the bill and is not just a figment of some modern numerologist's overheated imagination: for example, he says the old Latin motto was properly "Ex pluribus unum," which was modified to the less usual usage of "E pluribus unum" to achieve the count of 13 letters in the motto; similarly "Novus ordo saeclorum" was modified to the less usual "Novus ordo seclorum" to achieve the count of 17 letters for numerological reasons that he goes on to explain. Ovason has discovered that there are 33 words or groups of numbers on the obverse (p 115; be sure to count the tiny number, usually overlooked, to the "southeast" of the big ONE), and that there are nine "units" to the large word "ONE" with 11 shadow units, numerologically significant numbers. What makes this convincing to me (not mentioned by Ovason) is the fact that the two smallest shadow units are totally unnecessary to the artistic design, in fact they are obtrusive once you notice them (they look a bit like apostrophes, and you would probably not notice them if you were not looking for them), so they have to have been deliberately planted into the pattern. (It is too bad the designer of the 1935 dollar bill, Edward M. Weeks, evidently never set forth in writing the symbolism he went to such lengths to put into his product.) On page 114 he says the letters USA appear on the back of the dollar bill 26 times; what he means is that the letters U, S and A taken separately appear 26 times in total. However, I see no significance to this number. If there is any, he does not tell us what it is. "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ONE DOLLAR" has 37 letters, which does have a numerological significance (page 114). Then there is the business of the pyramid; according to our author, there are 202 surviving courses in the Great Pyramid of Gizeh (said to be the model for the pyramid on the dollar bill). Seven more courses, at the top, including the capstone, are missing or fragmentary, whatever that means. That would make 209 courses total in the intact pyramid. But some say it was 221, or, as on page 88, 211. Be that as it may (a topic for future investigation?), the highest surviving course is "nine massy stones" plus "two that are wanting at the angles" or 11 stones. Someone is bound to eventually claim there is some link between this number and the terrorist incidents of 9-11-2001, itself a rich field of numerological study. Anyway, this lavishly illustrated little tome will provide anyone who loves symbols with hours of educational entertainment, and ammunition for many a conversation or bet when the cocktail hour rolls around.

CHAPTER 1

Farm to Pipe

So powerful it can quell grand mal seizures, so gentle you’ll never suffer a hangover, cannabis is the closest thing on Earth to a miracle plant. So what could be more fascinating than getting up close and personal with lovely Ms. Mary Jane?

Prior to first meeting Valerie Leveroni Corral, co-founder and director of the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) in Santa Cruz, California, I’d already had the honor and privilege of documenting dozens of different marijuana grows—legal and illegal, indoors and outdoors, organic and hydroponic, one-light closet tents and large “guerrilla gardens” clandestinely planted in remote, difficult-to-access backcountry. But typically I stuck around just long enough to take a guided tour, interview the cultivators, inventory the plants, and sample the goods before heading home to write my story.

Then, in 2010, after seven years working out of High Times headquarters in midtown Manhattan, I relocated to Northern California, and took on a new role as the magazine’s West Coast editor.

Seeking the true heart and soul of the California cannabis movement, I made WAMM one of my first stops upon reaching the left coast. I’d already heard and read much about the collective’s politics—how for twenty years they’ve focused on low-income, seriously ill patients otherwise unable to afford medicine; how they helped pass America’s first statewide medical-marijuana law; and how they survived a DEA raid, then turned around two weeks later and defiantly distributed marijuana to the terminally ill on the steps of city hall—but I had no idea how they managed to plant, tend, and harvest a garden productive enough to supply their hundreds of members with cannabis for an entire year with only a skeleton crew and a small, dedicated team of volunteers.

On the chilly spring morning when I visited WAMM for the first time, the collective’s fledgling seedlings were just getting transplanted into five-gallon pots. Valerie put my wife, Elise, and I to work right away, digging holes and mixing soil. She also welcomed us into an amazing community of reefer revolution- aries, and encouraged us to come back for more. So over the next year (and the years to follow) I got to closely follow the crop’s natural life cycle—from seed to harvest—for the first time, while making a lot of new, kindhearted friends, learning the art and craft of outdoor cannabis growing, and at long last, getting some dirt under my fingernails.

“Growth is so obvious in the garden—you don’t have to wait long to see it,” Valerie once told me, explaining that many seriously ill and even terminal patients find the process of producing their own medicine to be highly empowering. “The garden gives us an opportunity to build something bigger than ourselves. That not only helps the healing, it puts us more in touch with the cycles of life.”

So let’s begin by understanding how the cannabis plant germinates, grows, flowers, and reproduces, and then we’ll explore the many ways clever cultivators seek to optimize this process in search of higher potency and heavier harvests.

THE CANNABIS LIFE CYCLE

Like humanity, Cannabis sativa is a dioecious species, which means it predominantly produces distinctly male and female organisms, in roughly equal number. Pot is also an annual, meaning individual members of the species complete their entire life cycle in less than one year.

In nature, each plant begins life when a previously dormant seed begins to germinate in early spring. Only the strongest and most viable of these seeds manage to throw off their seed casings, stretch into seedlings, grow into mature plants, and prop- agate the species. The rest, at some point along that journey, fall by the genetic wayside, helpfully winnowing the herd through natural selection.

Seeds and Clones

Whether dropped naturally in the autumn by a wild pot plant in the far reaches of Afghanistan’s rugged Kush mountain range, or carefully placed into a moistened rock-wool cube by a state- licensed marijuana grower in Boulder, Colorado, every genetically distinct cannabis plant on Earth starts as a seed—though like many commercial crops, from bananas and avocados to vanilla and lavender, the vast majority of the marijuana in circulation actually began life as a “clone” or “cutting.”

Seedlings grow faster and heartier than these cuttings, but only after a long, delicate germination period. So most cannabis cultivators opt to start each new crop not from seed but by plucking healthy leaves from the lower branches of a special “mother plant” kept for this purpose, and then replanting those leaves in soil or a medium to take root—a technique that saves weeks of growth time on the front end, and also ensures a genetically uniform set of plants moving forward, which is especially important when trying to manage a tightly packed indoor grow.

Another big advantage of using cuttings is that all of your plants will be female (assuming you start with a female “mother plant,” of course). Only females produce THC and marijuana’s other medicinal and/or psychoactive components in appreciable amounts, so taking clones saves the trouble of waiting for seedlings to show their sex (at about six weeks) and then culling all the males.

Vegetative Growth

Seedlings and clones require a couple of weeks to establish themselves, at which point they “take root,” and enter a period of rapid growth. Whether cultivated indoors or out, cannabis will remain in this “vegetative” state—growing taller and wider, and producing a large number of leaves, but not budding—as long as it’s exposed to more than twelve hours of light per day.

Flowering

As the days grow shorter in the autumn, and in particular when the available daylight dips below twelve hours per day, female cannabis plants begin flowering. At which point, they stop growing significantly taller or wider, instead focusing energy on producing more and larger buds covered in trichomes—resinous glands that look like tiny crystals to the naked eye, and like a fluid-filled globe atop a matchstick when magnified.

Male cannabis plants also flower, but unlike females, their flowers don’t produce significant amounts of THC-laden resin, so savvy marijuana cultivators either grow all females from clone or, if growing from seed, kill off all their male plants long before they reach maturity. Either way, the resulting all-female crop, if effectively shielded from pollination, will reach maturity without seeds (or sinsemilla, as the technique is commonly known).

Now, as anybody of a certain age can tell you, there’s nothing wrong with smoking seeded pot, once you remove the seeds, but it’s also, assuredly, less than ideal, because all of the unique compounds in cannabis, collectively known as cannabinoids— including the ones that get you high and help prevent Alzheimer’s—are predominantly found in the trichomes. And once a formerly virginal female comes in contact with the wind- blown pollen of a male plant, she immediately curtails cannabinoid production in favor of literally “going to seed.”

Harvest and Curing

As a female cannabis flower matures, its trichomes change color, starting off clear, turning a translucent milky white, and finally darkening to amber. Harvesting on the early side (translucent trichomes) can limit overall potency but offers a more cerebral, soaring high, while waiting until the trichomes turn amber yields a stronger, but more sedative stone.

Whenever harvest happens, it takes weeks after cutting down a plant to properly dry, trim, and cure its flowers. Start by strip- ping off the large fan leaves and hanging the buds from their stems in a cool, dark place with steady air circulation for seven to ten days. Trimmed leaves can be saved to make hashish (see page 53), while smokable flowers, once sufficiently dry, are carefully manicured with scissors to remove the smaller, higher- potency “sugar leaves.”
From there, the buds must be cured to leech out the last traces of moisture trapped inside—an often overlooked process that actually plays an outsized role in the smokability of the end product.

“It’s a lot like the aging of a fine wine,” legendary cannabis breeder DJ Short, creator of Blueberry, Old Time Moonshine, and other popular strains, told me once for a High Times story. “The benefits of properly cured cannabis include even moisture content and a complete breakdown of chlorophyll, which allows the full, clear expression of taste and aroma to emerge.”

Most growers cure buds by carefully stacking as many as possible into an airtight container without damaging them. Over time, trace amounts of moisture inside the buds will evaporate. Periodically opening the container and turning the buds over releases this moisture and allows more to sweat out until the buds are perfectly and evenly dry (usually about a week).

At which point, at long lost, the herb is ready to blaze.

YOU’VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY:  HOW PROHIBITION CHANGED WEED GROWING

Back in the Jazz Age, when pot smoking first achieved international notoriety, there was no such thing as indoor chronic anywhere on Earth, and marijuana was still an import crop in the United States. In those pre-prohibition days, the nation’s rather meager supply reached our shores not as a commercial product per se, but rather as a friendly camp follower passed around among in-the-know aficionados.

Still legal in most states until the mid-1930s, in part due to its obscurity, the herb counted among its earliest adopters migrant Mexican farmhands, who grew marihuana at home and brought it with them when moving north in search of work, and New Orleans’s freewheeling jazz musicians, who got their hands on Caribbean-grown ganja from sailors freshly arrived at the city’s bustling port. Both groups eagerly spread the practice to outsiders they encountered, but it was the jazz cats who turned gage into a national phenomenon, literally scattering cannabis seeds far and wide during their travels on the music circuit, and figuratively doing the same by inserting sly, appreciative references to reefer into their recordings and radio appearances.

As Cab Calloway sang on his 1933 hit “Reefer Man,” which doubled as a somewhat impractical guide to finding a pot dealer, “If he trades you dimes for nickels, and calls watermelon’s pickles,” he’s probably the reefer man.

Of course, no good turn goes unpunished in America, especially if you’re black or Mexican, and so once the establishment caught a whiff of this fragrant new cultural trend, the government and the media started cooking up a scare campaign designed to turn marihuana into a terrifying menace. Then they used the resulting public panic as a way to seek authoritarian control over both the cannabis plant and the undesirable people consuming it.

“I consider marijuana the worst of all narcotics, far worse than the use of morphine or cocaine,” Judge John Foster Symes declared in 1937 while sentencing Samuel Caldwell, the first person arrested under federal marijuana prohibition, to four years of hard labor for dealing two joints in the lobby of a seedy Denver hotel. “Marijuana destroys life itself. I have no sympathy with those who sell this weed. The government is going to enforce this new law to the letter.”

Maybe so, but soon enough, a loosely knit black market sprouted up to supply marijuana to the masses despite this new prohibition, headed by an iconoclastic, decentralized corps of small-time international pot smugglers—a system that remained largely in place until 1973, when Richard Nixon created the DEA, and tasked them with stopping the steady flow of foreign weed into the United States.

Within a few years of that first salvo in the modern War on Drugs, imported herb became expensive and hard to score, due to massive interdiction efforts on the borders, and the long prison sentences handed out to those who got caught. Eventually, the little guys wouldn’t take the risk anymore, and the real criminals quickly discovered that cocaine brought in much higher profits, and so a market vacuum opened that didn’t make people stop smoking pot but did inspire large numbers of them to start experimenting with growing their own.

A lot of high-paying jobs were thus created right here at home by transforming the nation’s underground marijuana sup- ply line from an import business into a cottage industry. Which made everyone happy, except the smugglers, and the human paraquats running the DEA, who decided to respond to the scourge of people growing unauthorized plants on their own land, or out in the middle of nowhere, by recruiting a bunch of combat helicopter pilots who were battle-hardened in Vietnam and ordering them to fly sorties all over the country, seeking out marijuana plantations from the air and terminating them with extreme prejudice.

And so, in a classic case of unintended consequences, the DEA basically invented indoor marijuana growing. Not by secretly designing and selling the high-intensity discharge lights required to cultivate full-potency pot indoors (unless you believe some seriously far out conspiracy theories) but simply by
creating a set of incentives that unleashed a massive wave of American ingenuity on the question of how to transform cannabis into a hothouse flower.

As a result, once again, our nation’s incredibly resourceful cannabis community went a little further underground. In many cases literally underground, as a large, unfinished basement is often the ideal place to grow indoor marijuana away from the prying eyes of Big Government’s black helicopters. At least, that was the case ten years ago, when even the world’s most skilled indoor cannabis cultivators typically helmed operations of just a dozen 1,000-watt lights, most often concealed within their own homes. Nowadays, of course, state-licensed marijuana cultivation facilities can be truly industrial-sized operations, employing dozens of people, and producing hundreds of pounds of usable bud or more per month.

A few days before Colorado’s recreational pot stores opened to the public for the first time on January 1, 2014, I visited one such operation, the awe-inspiring cultivation facility of Denver’s Medicine Man, which ranks among the state’s leading marijuana dispensaries. Seeking background for a trilogy of VICE articles (Tomorrow, I’m going to buy legal weed; I just bought legal weed; I just smoked legal weed), I took a guided tour of a grow room the size, scale, and professionalism of which I could have scarcely dreamed possible just a few years earlier.

Medicine Man features a sleek, modern retail space up front, with 40,000 square feet of dedicated cultivation and processing space housed in the same building—albeit behind locked and heavily secured doors. Andy Williams, Medicine Man’s principal owner, told me he’d rather not put a number on the amount of marijuana they harvest on-site every month, lest any nefarious characters start to get ideas, but let’s just say it’s more than enough to make Snoop Dogg blush.

Andy, however, never blushes. He’s a former military officer and aerospace executive with a hard nose for business and an unshakable determination to build his family-run enterprise into an industry leader. Only he doesn’t smoke pot, and doesn’t know a thing about growing it. So he leaves all that to his green- thumbed brother Pete.

“People think it takes a lone mystical grower, some guru, to produce top grade marijuana,” Pete, who most certainly does get high on his own supply, told me, “but it doesn’t. It takes a standard operating procedure.”

Of course, Pete didn’t start from scratch when designing and building Medicine Man’s state-of-the-art cultivation system, but rather took a scientific approach to scaling up and refining a series of techniques and procedures long developed by under- ground growers. Because whether you’re cultivating just four illicit plants in a closet for head stash and extra cash, or tending to an “indoor acre” of fully legal commercial cannabis, the objective remains the same: to yield the largest amount of high-quality marijuana possible, as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Unfortunately, many of the methods developed to meet this goal resemble the agribusiness world of monocropping and factory farming far more than I’d like to admit, with the added drag of running all those energy-intense grow lights eighteen to twenty-four hours a day. Which means the dirty little secret of the cannabis industry is that a product typically identified with “green values” can have a shockingly high carbon footprint, and other serious environmental consequences, depending on where and how it’s grown.

From a purely technical perspective, however, indoor growing offers several clear advantages, which explains why it retains market dominance even in states with fully regulated cultivation. For starters, skilled indoor growers can achieve total mastery of their plants’ environment, including consistently providing the optimal temperature, humidity, nutrients, air circulation, and irrigation needed to promote rapid growth. Indoor growers also decide exactly how much artificial sunlight their plants will receive, including when to induce flowering by low- ering the photoperiod below twelve hours per day. So while outdoor gardens produce only one harvest each year (typically in late September/early October), indoor growers usually start flowering their plants a mere two to four weeks after they take root as clones, with the entire clone-to-harvest cycle taking just ninety days or so.

My good friend and cannabis colleague Danny Danko, senior cultivation editor at High Times, believes that, closely examined, indoor marijuana isn’t just a different process from outdoor, it’s in many ways a different product.
“Marijuana flowers grown indoors tend to be denser than their outdoor counterparts, and because people tend to grow less indoors than outside, the quality of the trimming is usually better too, with less leaf material present. This means the bud- to-leaf ratio tends to be higher for indoor pot, making it taste better (less harsh leaf taste) and burn better,” Danny asserts.
