The twelve-part process of dependent arising shows how actions underlain by ignorance propel us from one rebirth into another, keeping us trapped in suffering, and how through understanding reality correctly we can break this cycle. The twelve links that make up this chain of causes and effects are an extension of the four noble truths, the heart of the Buddha's teaching, and demonstrate in particular the connection between true suffering and true sources of suffering. This oral teaching by Geshe Sonam Rinchen is based on the Rice Seedling Sutra and the twenty-sixth chapter of Nagarjuna's Treatise on the Middle Way.

About the Author
Geshe Sonam Rinchen (1933–2013) studied at Sera Je Monastery and in 1980 received the Lharampa Geshe degree. He taught Buddhist philosophy and practice at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India, as well as in dharma centers around the world.

Disappointed

I was very disappointed with this book. With a plain, straightforward title, I had hoped the writing style would be the same. But it seems the author's goal was to shed light on Tibetan sources that dealt with karma, rather than to shed light on karma itself.

I often felt he was explaining about mandalas that symbolize karma, rather than explaining karma.

Karma is a complex topic. I don't feel I understand it any better after having wrestled with this book.

Good introduction on the twelve links of D.O.

If you are looking for a good introduction to the twelve links of dependent origination, this is a very good book. D.O. is a central concept of the Buddha's teachings.

Like many topics in Buddhism, however, one is given a list -- six of this, eight of that, etc. I often find myself asking: "what did the Buddha mean by 'form & function?'" This book tells you in plain English. I'm a big fan of Ruth Sonam's style.

While this book may not answer all of your questions about karma, if you're a beginner like me, it's a good start.

Berman, an oral historian and author (Search for Meaning, Ballantine, 1993), believes there are common themes and insights into near-death experiences (NDEs) through which we can obtain a greater appreciation of life. His collection of interviews is less comprehensive than Near Death Experience: A Reader (Routledge, 1996), but it is more thorough in underscoring common themes in NDEs. Most NDEs relate the participant's need to become closer to his or her God, to gain knowledge; individuals do not lose a fear of dying but do lose a fear of death. The transformation in the individual after the incident demonstrates that he or she has had a glimpse of a profound spiritual vision. Berman includes in this collection Howard Storm, a former art professor, whose NDE was a trip to a dark place (hell); in his despair he called to God for assistance and moved to the bright light. I have just finished reading THE JOURNEY HOME by Philip L.Berman and I want to shout from the housetops: Read this book!
A Jewish scholar has interviewed people of various (or no) religious persuasions who have had NDE...Near Death Experiences. As one who has had such an experience, I have read every book I can find on the subject, and Berman's impressed me the most, probably because he is so objective.
In a fine writing style (I truly read this book in one sitting...or I should say, lying down!...) and wept with joy when I finished it, for it offers such faith, hope and love for all of us, whatever our beliefs. The similarity of the experiences are in themselves miraculous, yet it is the differences that make them believeable.
For example, in my own NDE experience I did not look down and see my body on the hospital gurney...but that is not surprising. I have never been one to look back, and I was so enthralled with the experience I had no interest in the world I had left. Nor did I see "my life flash before me"...maybe it did, but I wasn't watching. I was so drawn to the Light, the Sounds, the aurae, the people, all I wanted to do was stay there, forever. I didn't associate this with a DNE until years later when I read of similar experiences. Truly such an experience does change your life.
Just reading Berman's book can change your life. I defy anyone to read it through and still question the existance of an afterlife. I have recommended it for hospice reading, as well as family reading. No longer will the reader fear death.

NDEs, mysticism, and theology

This is a nice book. I can't claim familiarity with the entire literature on near-death experiences, but Phillip Berman's work seems to me to stand out in several respects.

First of all, a good deal of the book is devoted simply to describing NDEs as reported by the people who had them. In preparation for this volume, Berman interviewed literally hundreds of people -- and, moreover, scoured the world's religious literature looking for further historical examples. The results are not all included here; in fact he has probably had to leave out many more than he was able to put in. But his selections are well-chosen. (For example, he devotes an entire chapter to the neglected topic of "hellish" NDEs, notably the experience of one Howard Storm.) And he spends most of his time on straightforward reporting rather than rushing to conclusions.

Second, he ties all this NDE stuff to mystical tradition and "perennial philosophy" (which he prefers to call "eternal theology"). Himself Jewish, Berman also competently discusses the mystical traditions of e.g. Christianity and Buddhism without attempting either to adjudicate among their theologies or to reduce these religions to their strictly mystical portions. His conclusion, in a nutshell, is that NDEs and mysticism teach us essentially the same things about the nature of God and reality.

Third, his conclusions are presented with thoroughness and proper caution. Berman does not attempt to minimize or paper over the genuine differences among the various types of NDE and mystical experience; he does not proclaim that his work has "finally proven" something that was hitherto only suspected and that he has thereby settled all the important questions; he deals sensitively and compassionately with the losses of loved ones (including his own) without relying in any way on maudlin sentiment at the expense of empirical reportage and theological argumentation. Generally speaking, he knows the difference between conclusions and speculations, offering some of each and claiming for his work just what it deserves. This is a sober and responsible work of theology, not an extended piece of tabloid journalism.

Fourth, his topic is precisely what his subtitle indicates: he is interested in what NDEs and mystical experiences _teach us_, not in telling us how to go about _having_ such experiences ourselves (nor even in urging the importance of having them). He has what I regard as a healthy sense (based firmly in all of the religious traditions with which he deals) that there is something unsound about seeking such experiences for oneself, and for that matter about (mis)taking the purpose of religion to be the bringing about of such experiences. This is, again, a work of theology, not a how-to handbook.

This seems to me to be a standout work, then. Again, I do not claim to have read the whole NDE literature, but of the handful of books I _have_ read, this one is unique. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in these topics.

A worthy effort, especially because it is based on statistically significant research.

I nearly died a year ago, and I have read several books with accounts of Near-Death Experiences (NDE.) This is the most objective and evidence-driven NDE book I have found. The first two-thirds of the volume present both a theoretical model of NDEs, and a number of accounts by people who have had one or more NDEs. This was the most compelling part of the book. The third part was what had led me to buy this particular treatise, because it is about mysticism. Berman believes that the mystical experience is very similar to an NDE, or to phrase it more properly, he appears to believe that NDEs are inherently mystical experiences.

The virtue is that all this material developed naturally out of over 500 interviews Berman conducted after his daughter died stillborn. A number of those he interviewed had had NDEs and a smaller number, mystical experiences. These people he interviewed more carefully, and developed the theoretical framework he presents at the beginning.

I was somewhat disappointed with his coverage of mysticism, and also skeptical about his apparently complete acceptance of not just the phenomenon of the NDE, but the reality which he believes to be the underlying cause or purpose of them. I am always skeptical of anything which purports to "prove" the existence of either God or an Afterlife, even though I am open to the possibility of both.

A worthy effort, especially because it is based on statistically significant research. My therapist recommended this book.

Heavy duty introduction to policy anaytic techniques: A Classic!

Stokey and Zeckhauser. . . . Those names have sent shivers through students of policy analysis over time. This represents a strong and rigorous introduction to major tools for policy analysis. If you successfully process this book, you will be well equipped to analyze policy.

The first section of the book comprises three chapters, providing an introduction to policy and policy analysis. The authors note at the outset (Page ix): "This is a do-it-yourself book: the more effort you put into it, the more understanding you will get out of it." Furthermore (Page 3): ". . .the emphasis in this book is on how decisions ought to be analyzed and made, rather than on the details of the information that should serve as inputs to the decision." Discussion in this section examines models and how to choose which models to use.

But the guts of the book is Part II, "Nuts and Bolts." Here, the reader is introduced to a variety of tools of policy analysis. Examples: Queues (this helps answer the question of how many ticket booths should be available at a baseball game); Simulations; benefit-cost analysis (weigh the costs and benefits of a proposal, to see if benefits outweigh costs; if not, maybe consider not taking the action); decision analysis; and so on.

Part III, "Ends and Means," reflects on such issues as the government's role when the market fails, addressing social welfare, and putting policy analysis to work.

A difficult but outstanding work. This is a major resource for the policy analyst, even though it is three decades old now.

Better Understanding Now of What Men Want

The author of this Kindle book (a man) was very transparent about what men want when they are in a relationship with a woman. Surprisingly, there's very little about sexual things, which I greatly appreciated. There are a lot of really good tips about how men want to be treated in relationships that I am sure will be very helpful. It was refreshing to read a well written Kindle book on this subject, as I desire to be all that I can be when I am in love. This book is well worth the little it costs.

Good Book About Understanding Men

This book capture my attention and aroused curiosity, so I bought it. The idea of knowing what men want in relationships with women is brilliant. I've always wanted my partner to me a mind reader and know what I want. With information like this, women can be educated as to some of the things that most men want in relationships, monogamous or not. I found the suggestions in this guide for women to be very well written and accurate. a wonderful insight, horrible binding.

i think this book goes some ways into showing people that not only was rozz a very talented musician, but his best work was done with audial and visual arts. if you do buy this book be forewarned that it is obviously not just a few of these books that fall apart. it seems to be all of them, so if you don't want to keep re-ordering this book, then plan to spend a few dollars on rebinding it. the origonal binding seems to be some cheap foam-like glue. myself and my wife are having ours hardbound for around $60. very good investment though. if you are interested in surrealist art or the music and artistic endeavors of mr. williams this book will not in any way dissappoint.

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wants to remember Rozz Williams, to learn more about this pioneering artist, or to understand the origins of Christian Death. The book has sections on each of Rozz's musical projects and includes pictures, lyrics, and brief background information for each era, as well as poems, mixed-media collages, and a pretty good discography that includes many imports and singles.

First I should mention... the book did fall apart upon first viewing and now everytime I look at it I have to be extremely careful and alert at how the book is being handled. However, when one gets past this sorry state of affairs regarding the fragility of the book, one can not help but be impressed by its content: photo's, artwork, gig flyers, poetry, lyrics, commentary, tour dates, release dates. Indeed Nico B has put together as complete a package of Rozz Williams brief life possible. Any fan of Rozz Williams the artist would be pleased with this book which displays the creative genius and abilities of the man impeccably

Meticulously researched and eloquently written, Proud Shoes provides both an engrossing story of one family and an historical overview of race relations in the United States spanning almost one hundred years. Pauli Murray grew up in the South with her grandparents, Cornelia and Robert Fitzgerald, two strong-willed individuals of vastly different backgrounds. Cornelia, the child of a beautiful house slave and the master's son who drove away her lawful husband and repeatedly raped her, was brought up in a Southern household, both heir and slave. Robert grew up in the North, the sickly child of free black Thomas and his white wife Sarah Ann, who through her marriage "enlisted in a cause which called for raw courage and no retreats." Educated and brave, Robert refused to pass for white and waited impatiently until the Union allowed blacks into the military; his determination and heroism on and off the battlefield served as a constant example and a psychological shield against the racism of young Pauli's world. As Pauli Murray traces her family's history, she shows the Civil War from two sides and describes a world of North and South, pre- and post-emancipation, filled with family stories, laws, injustice, bravery, and heroes and villains of both races. About the Author
Fawwaz Ulaby
Since joining the University of Michigan faculty in 1984, Professor Ulaby has directed numerous interdisciplinary projects aimed at the development of high-resolution satellite radar sensors for mapping Earth's terrestrial environment. He also served as the founding director of the NASA-funded Center for Space Terahertz Technology, whose research was aimed at the development of microelectronic devices and circuits that operate at wavelengths between the infrared and the microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. He then served a seven-year term as the University of Michigan's vice president for research from 1999-2005. Over his academic career, he has published 10 books and supervised more than 100 graduate students.

Professor Ulaby is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and serves on several international scientific boards and commissions. In recognition for his outstanding teaching and distinguished scholarship, he has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards from universities, government agencies, and scientific organizations. Among them are the NASA Achievement Award (1990), the IEEE Millennium Medal (2000), the 2002 William Pecora Award, a joint recognition by NASA and the Department of the Interior, and the Distinguished FEA Alumni Award from the American University of Beirut (2006). In 2006, he was selected by the students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as "Professor of the Year," and shortly thereafter, he was awarded the Thomas Edison Medal, the oldest medal in the field of electrical and computer engineering in the United States.

Umberto Ravaioli
Professor Ravaioli attended the University of Bologna, Italy, where he obtained degrees in Electronics Engineering and Physics. He conducted his dissertation work on fiber optics and microwaves at the laboratories of the Marconi Foundation in Villa Griffone, the summer estate where Guglielmo Marconi performed his first radio experiments. After developing interests in high speed semiconductor devices and large scale computation, he pursued a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University, where he developed Monte Carlo particle simulations for the high electron mobility transistor.

He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986. He was a co-founder of the National Center for Computational Electronics, which promoted for over a decade the development of large scale device simulation by leveraging resources at national supercomputing centers. His research group has developed Monte Carlo and quantum simulators for a wide range of semiconductor device applications, expanding recent activities to charge transport in biological systems, coupled electro-thermal simulation, and nanoelectronics. He is now the leader of the Computational Multiscale Nanosystems group at the Beckman Institute of the University of Illinois and is also serving as Senior Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the College of Engineering.

Professor Ravaioli is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP). He received the First Place Outstanding Paper Award at the 2007 IEEE International Conference on Electron Information Technology for his recent work on electro-thermal simulation.

Unusable for US College students!

This product does not have the same problems as the US edition of the textbook. Plus I do not know if there are any other errors. This to me should be stated somewhere.

This book has it all-good history, romance, suspense and enjoyable to read

I thought the book had it all-suspense, romance, and history. I learned a lot about Armenian genocide but I also felt victims of other genocides could relate to this story.

The novel starts in 1990 with Orhan's grandfather, Kemal’s, death in 1990. Orhan learns that his grandfather has left the family house to some unknown older woman who is living in a nursing home in California. Orhan goes to California to meet this woman and to buy the family house back from her.

The woman then tell Orhan the story about his grandfather and his relationship with her family which was Armenian and living in Turkey. The story goes back to 1914 when Kemal was a teenager and was working for this Armenian family who falls victim to the Armenian genocide in Turkey.

The novel tries very hard not to vilify the Turks (which is hard to do if your family was a victim of genocide). The novel does an excellent job of describing difficulties in relationships among groups that are separated by the three factors of religion, social class and ethnic groups.

I found the novel very easy to read despite its describing a very sad chapter in history. For readers who like romance there is a love story. In short I found this book not only informative but a real page turner.

As a First Read winner of "Orhan's Inheritance", I must disclose that I received this particularly wonderful book in exchange for an honest review.

I have been reviewing books from Goodreads for a little over a year, and most of the ones I received have been ones that I have rated well but this one goes way over the top. If I could have given it more than five stars I would have. This kind of book doesn't come around as often as it should. The storyline; compelling, the characters;masterpieces, the history; fascinating and the language; pure poetry. Congratulations, Aline, for creating such an outstanding book for all to read. And a first novel at that! There will be a lot of us waiting for your next story.

This book starts out with some amazing quotes and I love quotes. I attach them to many of the photographs I take and so, early on in the story, I started jotting down all the quotes that I was particularly interested in and by the end of the book, I had filled the entire inside of the cover jacket with quotes. Of course, it didn't hurt any that the very first paragraph has the reader saying, "What the heck...?", which sends us off into a world that few people really know about and a journey into the mind and soul of a people who are in a world quite different from ours. Yet...the language suggests that we can all be influenced by the Turkish proverbs that abound in Aline's novel.

In so many ways this novel touched my own photographic soul. Art is an integral component of all of our cultures. Humans strive to tell stories, whether it is in the form of petroglyphs, oral storytelling, paintings, textiles, architecture, sculpture, motion pictures or words in books. Art is always under attack in some form or another. Orhan was incarcerated for his art which was seen as a form of rebellion. He put his art "away" and in the end brought it back out into the light to tell the story of his people. Ohanesian's book is just that; a work of art in the form of words that tells the story of her people. I am so glad to have been a winner of this important novel.

Beautifully crafted story, start to finish!

An amazing story full of beautifully crafted characters in a truly universal theme-love, loss and survival during a time of political unrest and incredible hardship. The author writes with such emotion and grace. Her imagery and symbolism ring true for all human beings. I simply couldn't put this book down!!

About the Author
Paul Keery holds degrees in history, law, library and information science, and education. In 2007, he was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator in recognition of his work in integrating technology into classroom teaching. Keery has published a history book for young people, Maple Leaf Forever, on the history of Canada's Confederation, as well as articles for a number of newspapers and professional journals.

Michael Wyatt is a self-taught artist who began his career as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer in 2006. His original designs have appeared on everything from greeting cards to hockey jerseys. He has contributed artwork to Kayak and Legion magazines, and his cartoons and caricatures are syndicated internationally.

Brilliant overview of Canada's involvement

Half way through Canada at War I realized it was filling in an odd gap in my education. I had read about the Dutch experience of World War II in great kids' books like Anne de Vries' Journey Through the Night and Piet Prins' Scout: The Secret of the Swamp, and a love of classic war films like Casablanca and Twelve O'Clock High had given me a good sampling of the American perspective. But I don't know if I've ever seen the war through Canadian eyes.

Canada at War is a "graphic history" - otherwise known as a comic - but it would be a mistake to dismiss this as fluffy kids' stuff. It is weighty and well-researched and would be best understood as an illustrated history textbook. It includes chapters on:

- Canada before the war
- Canada's early defeats defending Hong Kong from the Japanese and attacking German-held Dieppe, France
- The creation and impact of Canada's Air Force
- The Canadian Navy's seemingly impossible task of protecting the Atlantic supply chain from U-boat attacks
- The costly lessons our Army learned in Sicily and Italy
- The joint invasion of Europe
- The Canadian role in the liberation of the Netherlands and the final defeat of Germany

Author Paul Keery, and illustrator Michael Wyatt do a masterful job of explaining, in just 176 pages, how Canada went from having next to no military to, in the space of just five years, becoming the third most powerful fighting force in the world. And they give readers a good understanding of just how much we owe the 1 million men who served.

Cumulatively the pictures are worth many thousands of words. Descriptions can't quite convey the information available in a picture of a sailor waste deep in water on a leaky Corvette assigned to protect otherwise defenseless supply ships on their way to Britain. There is also a lot packed into a single frame, where we see a bomber pilot relaxing at his home base, happy to have survived another bombing run, but knowing that he has only a 1 in 4 chance of living through to the end of his tour.

The style of the visuals is also striking: it's a mix of quite realistic computer animation and solid simple lines. Illustrator Michael Wyatt shows us action and lots of it including planes being blown apart and submarines being sunk. Wyatt uses great restraint, showing the results of war - the blood, death and destruction - without dwelling on the gory detail. This bloody detail is most often muted, either by being obscured (often times by making use of silhouette images) or by being skipped right over. For example, in one exchange we see a soldier with blood on his face, but only learn how it happened from the caption. But as should be expected in a "graphic history" or World War II, there are a few "graphic" frames. However, Canada at War is intended for a young adult readership, so these pictures are unlikely to shock them. I've included a few of these frames in my review at ReallyGoodReads.com, so that parents can evaluate them for themselves.

An impacting book, that will give this generation a far better understanding of what their grandparents and great grandparents endured to give them the Canada they see today.

Very Good Overview of the Canadian contribution to the Second World War

This is a good overview of the Canadian contribution to the Second World War. The book does a good job with both the fight against the Germans and the Japanese. As it is arranged thematically, it does need to be backed with a larger work on the Second World War to get the most out of it. This reader was not all that keen on the CGI illustrations but the art is clear enough that the graphic aspect of this graphic history works.
