Collected Works: A Journal of Jazz 1954-2001, by Whitney Balliett

Jazz critic for The New Yorker since 1957 and the author of some fifteen books, Whitney Balliett has spent a lifetime listening to and writing about jazz. "All first-rate criticism," he once wrote in a review, "first defines what we are confronting." He could as easily have been describing his own work. For nearly half a century, Balliett has been telling us, in his widely acclaimed pitch-perfect prose, what we are confronting when we listen to America's greatest―and perhaps only original―musical form.

Collected Works: A Journal of Jazz 1954-2001 is a monumental achievement, capturing the full range and register of the jazz scene, from the very first Newport Jazz Festival to recent performances (in clubs and on CDs) by a rising generation of musicians. Here are definitive portraits of such major figures as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Django Reinhardt, Martha Raye, Buddy Rich, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Art Tatum, Bessie Smith, and Earl Hines―a list that barely scratches the surface. Generations of readers have learned to listen to the music with Balliett's graceful guidance. For five decades he has captured those moments during which jazz history is made.

Though Balliett's knowledge is an encyclopedic treasure, he has always written as if he were listening for the first time. Since its beginnings in New Orleans at the turn of the century, jazz has been restlessly and relentlessly evolving. This is an art form based on improvising, experimenting, shapeshifting―a constant work in progress of sounds and tonal shades, from swing and Dixieland, through boogie-woogie, bebop, and hard bop, to the "new thing," free jazz, abstract jazz, and atonal jazz. Yet, in all its forms, the music is forever sustained by what Balliett calls a "secret emotional center," an "aural elixir" that "reveals itself when an improvised phrase or an entire solo or even a complete number catches you by surprise." Balliett's celebrated essays invariably capture the so-called "sound of surprise"―and then share this sound with general readers, music students, jazz lovers, and popular American culture buffs everywhere. As The Los Angeles Times Book Review has observed, "Few people can write as well about anything as Balliett writes about jazz."

Review

“Balliett is one of those rare critics whose prose can be as much a work of art as what they write about.” ―The New York Times

“Studied, sparkling descriptions [that] bubble over with the qualities that make Mr. Balliett the most important chronicler of jazz ever--his ear for intense detail, his knack for rendering the mood of a performance, his love for the characters behind the music.” ―Dallas Morning News

“Balliett is the master mandarin stylist of all jazz critics, perhaps even of all critics . . . Savor this book for Balliett's elegant, even Ellingtonian-like verbal riffs filled with the sound of surprise.” ―The Hartford Courant

“This wonderful collection effortlessly teaches us the history of jazz and demonstrates again that Whitney Balliett is, like Updike and Nabokov, a miraculous writer, one who describes the indescribable.” ―William Whitworth, editor emeritus, The Atlantic Monthly

“Duke Ellington would say of a very few musicians that they were beyond category. Among those of us who write about jazz, so is Whitney Balliett.” ―Nat Hentoff

“Collected Works stands alongside Gary Giddins's similar book, Visions of Jazz: The First Century, as an invaluably cogent and forthright, self-assuredly individualistic history of jazz.” ―David Hajdu, The New York Review of Books

“Not only does Whitney Balliett know and love jazz, but he also possesses the poetic genius to champion it, riffing on language with all the fluency of the musicians whose praises he sings.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“Whitney Balliett's words are magic. His descriptions of the music and musicians are very affecting and his love for jazz shines through with every elegant phrase.” ―Marian McPartland

“Balliett is a master of language.” ―Philip Larkin

“I am not really generous enough to tell you what I really think about how good you are. Let's say I'm flabbergasted. And that I think you are extremely important.” ―Harold Brodkey

Unfortunate title to essential jazz journalism
By Bomojaz
Whitney Balliett is one of my favorite jazz writers (along with Dan Morgenstern and Ira Gitler), and I've enjoyed reading his pieces in The New Yorker since the 1960s. In the introduction to this book Balliett says he chose the title COLLECTED WORKS because "I like its ring"; that's a bit unfortunate because it gives the wrong impression. These are not his "collected works" but rather, as he again says in the introduction, "a distillation of many of the reviews and critical pieces that I have written about jazz." If you saved most of the original articles as I did, you would have a fairly decent sized pile of pieces that are not included here; perhaps even worse, you would notice that many of the articles appear in the book in truncated form (perhaps that's where the "distillation" comes in). One of the reasons I bought the book was because from its title and size (almost 900 pages) I thought I could take the Collected part literally, and I'd be able to free up some file cabinet space by discarding the original magazine articles. No way. I know this is a personal issue (mainly), but buyers should be aware of what they're getting (or not getting) here.

That being said, what you do get is absolutely worth having. Balliett knows the music as well as anyone and describes what he hears clearly and directly. He writes about the entire spectrum of jazz, from the earliest years of the music up into the avant-garde. Besides being deeply appreciative of the jazz masters (Armstrong, Morton, Ellington, Basie, Parker, Rollins, Coleman, to name just a handful) he writes about hundreds of musicians, good, bad, indifferent (but mainly good) who made it onto the jazz scene. He is particularly fond of good drummers (being a drummer himself). Reading The New Yorker you could be almost assured of getting Balliett's perspective on important jazz happenings in (particularly) the NYC area every couple of weeks or so. It was a wonderful steady diet of superb jazz journalism and criticism. It's great to have what's been included between book covers now, and hopefully what's missing gets published in book form some day, too. I really could use that file space.

A brilliant Jazz journalist
By Wagner F. Sacco
The man definitely has got style. His colorful articles on Jazz musicians can be considered literary works. Sometimes you feel his lack of musical background. But with such a charming style, who cares...

Balliett writes of one of the all-time great jazz singers
By Jeffrey Giles
In this collection of jazz criticism, Balliett writes of one of the all-time great jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, that she "rarely indulged in blue notes" and that "she was not emotional."

I admire Mildred Bailey precisely because of the bluesy and highly emotional quality of her singing, which has often brought tears to my eyes.

    Review
    Reference: amazon.com/review/RRQ4J5G9Z54LS/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=1475293534 [Let's Compare Options Preptorial]The other "big hitter" coding interview books which everyone knows about and which I review and compare frequently for our library purchasers:

    For VERY ADVANCED programmers, and assume you already know a LOT about trees, hash tables, arrays, matrices, etc. KARUMANCHI IS REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT!

    Nara does NOT assume you're a veteran programmer or a recent high level grad in the dream interview! He assumes you (maybe) know a little IT and a lot of Engineering or Math, for example, or that you're an older manager who is great at systems and strategy but rusty on coding. OR, maybe you're on the embedded or data science side and your programming is very deep (circuit/assembly) or broad (data mining) but not necessarilly OOP style algos and data structures.

    There is no book quite like this, because, even though it is in a different category than the 4 biggies above, it should appeal to a much bigger audience, not only for a certain type of interview (a little or no direct coding but perhaps managing people who do?) but a vast range of newer job types. Example: "Data Scientist" is a brand new, warp speed growing occupation with starting salaries as high as 200K US, and some firms are even creating "CDSO" positions (Chief Data Science Officer).

    The other thing Nara does, is give progressively more detailed and complex solutions to the same problems-- allowing you to go as shallow or deep as you'd like. From my field (math) an example would be: If you can code at interpreter level in Maple or Mathematica or GNU, it will compile and run, but not nearly as fast as if you know C++, algos, data structures and even a little assembly.

    If the job description says you'll be tested with phony problems to actually code in the interview, the other big four above are the ticket, but if the position only needs you to UNDERSTAND algos and DS's, Karumanchi is awesome. It also is a great (good sized), up to date REFERENCE for all levels of IT from Data scientists to math, engineering, research, physics, chemistry, etc. Even "R" folks like me can learn a LOT. When I create tutorials, if the students want a specific language to supplement this, I have them review a specific, usually older and used text like Lafore (Data Structures and Algorithms in Java (2nd Edition)) or any other in Python, C++, R, etc. Highly recommended for that somewhat different, unique, but GREAT job-- go for it and good luck!

    Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

    From the Author
    This book assumes you have some basic knowledge about computer science. Main objective of the book is not to provide you all the interview questions. I have followed a pattern of improving the problem solutions with different complexities (for each problem, you observe multiple solutions with different improved complexities in data structure and algorithmic problems).  Basically, it is an enumeration of possible solutions. With this approach, even if we get a new question it gives us a way to think about all possible solutions. For all other topics, it will act as refreshment. This book is very much useful for interview preparation, competitive exams preparation and campus preparations.

    As a job seeker if you read complete book with good understanding, I am sure you will challenge the interviewers and that is the objective of this book.

    This book is very much useful for the students of Engineering Degree and Masters during their academic preparations. All the chapters of this book contain theory and their related problems as many as possible. If you read as a student preparing for competition exams for Computer Science/Information Technology], the content of this book covers all the required topics in full details. While writing the book, an intense care has been taken to help students who are preparing for these kinds of exams.
    In most the chapters you will see more importance given to problems and analyzing them instead of concentrating more on theory. For each chapter, first you will see the basic required theory and then followed by problems.

    For many of the problems, multiple solutions are provided with different complexities. We start with brute force solution and slowly move towards the best solution possible for that problem. For each problem we will try to understand how much time the algorithm is taking and how much memory the algorithm is taking.

    I like this book
    By Ivy league
    I like this book. I'm learning a ton from it. The book covers everything we learn in cs courses from beginning till graduation. Explanations
    are very clear, making this book a lot easier to understand than some of the other programming interview books. I would have given this book
    5 stars except for the fact some of the codes in the book are not tested and don't work. It's usually easy to see the mistake made in the code that doesn't work and correct it. I suggest the author should test all the code in the book and publish them, say on github. Without some of the untested codes, this book would hand down be the best coding interview book of all. I definitely suggest you buy the book if you are in doubt. It will pay off a thousand times.

    Great for interviews ...
    By WindowShopper
    This book is very good. Has solutions ranging from easy to difficult. It also explains concepts very well. Of course, it is not a regular text book. So if you are new to the data structures, this isn't for you. If you have basic idea of data structures, this gives a good refresher and provides lots of questions so that you can improve your skills before the interview. Definitely a book to read to prepare for technical interviews

    Essential for all fans
    By Amidanshi
    I've been a Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) fan for many years. While I'm rather partial to a certain young Earl, I find all the characters quite intriguing and fascinating, so it's natural that I would enjoy this collection of art featuring Ciel, Sebastian, and the rest of the gang, all illustrated by the original artist, Yana Toboso. Also included are some illustrations of her first work (which nobody even remembers, sadly) called Rust Blaster, as well as a few other pieces.

    The volume, which is much too short for my preferences, features glossy, full-color pages filled with spreads and covers of primarily Bocchan, Sebaschan, though several also feature Grell and the other minor characters. At the end of the book, Toboso-sensei includes a small commentary on each of the pieces. The hardbound book includes two small bookmarks, one attached to each cover, as well. In traditional Japanese style, the book reads from right to left, though it doesn't much matter as the contents are entirely visual.

    Any fan of the series, and especially those who have a love for Sebastian and Ciel, really owe it to themselves to pick up this volume. I believe in supporting the artists and authors whose works I find enjoyable, and your purchase of this work also helps to do that. This is a beautiful book that will be a part of my collection for many years to come, and I'm certainly hoping for a second volume (and a third, and....)!

    The book itself was amazing...however...
    By RageoftheKeyblade<3
    The book was fantastic. Has wonderful art from the manga...!!! Simply Beautiful! However the book arrived with no protective bubble wrap or anything...so it came dented and scratched. The metallic embellishment was scratched and coming off. I give it two stars for the poor condition it arrived in although it was supposed to be new. I like my books in new condition, not slightly used.

    So incredibly happy!
    The book came in a flat carton brown box with a thin plastic wrapper.
    I bough it used and it came like new! The pictures are gorgeous!

    Review
    - If you like the Maze Runner and Hunger Games, but wished they had a few Vampires, Demons and a tad more heartache, this is the book for you! Louise on Goodreads.
    -I couldn't put it down! Robson came up with some clever and enchanting ideas in Golden. Some I wasn't expecting at all. The main character was relatable and well developed. Fast paced and engaging. Great Book. Nicale May - Author.

    Full Reviews for GOLDEN by Kathryn RobsonI was very impressed with how simply and effortlessly Kathryn Robson can tell this addicting, multi-layered story with well-developed world building and great characters and still manage to make vamps/demons fresh! A less talented author would probably over-write or over-dramatize to the point of being totally unbelievable. But even with the fantastical storyline we are all in, hooked on every scene, as the world building always follows its rules which is so important in books like this. At first it took me some time to acclimate and get the feel of the characters and their backstory... was confused on a few things, but stuck with it and it all became clear. A very well written and intoxicating read all through to the end. Can't wait to read more in this series and see what is in store for our "Golden" one next!! (5 stars) Nicola Flood-Barnes & Noble; I like how even though this novels is about vampires, which is a topic that seems to have been covered from almost every conceivable angle, the story never becomes predictable or feels cliché, and there are some nice plot twists I didn't see coming, especially at the end. The characters were so well developed and fleshed out I feel like I knew them personally, and for such a 'paranormal' themed book, it felt strangely believable... like more 'real' than most fantasy/paranormals, if this makes sense. The pacing was good, bu there were some editing errors (nothing major, just punctuation here and there--but I notice these things). An emotionally seductive and satisfying escape that I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a great paranormal novel with a unique take on the vampire/demon myth. Kathryn Robson did a terrific job making this story feel like something we haven't read a million times, which is pretty impressive. Ready for more in this series! Recommend. (4 stars) Sam Ryan--Goodreads; "Golden" by Kathryn Robson was one of the most unexpectedly awesome books I've read in a looong time. To be totally honest, at first I wasn't sure I'd like it because I had a hard time figuring out what it was about from the description, and I've been a bit burned out on paranormal lately (*they are all starting to feel the same). But I was really impressed with the high quality writing in the opening sample, and thought I'd take a chance. Well, I'm so glad I did! Much to my surprise it was so unique and original, it really was unlike anything I'd read, and in a good way!! I loved the fresh approach on vampire lore, and there were so many amazing characters (Amy, Daniel, Andras and Ariane are great)) It had so many interesting plot twists and once I got into the book it was impossible to put down, and once I finished I immediately looked for the next one, hoping the storyline continued! "Golden" is a wonderful book for reading on those cold winter nights--A fantastical, yet believable storyline that leaves you wanting more. Probably best suited for adults only, even though it is upper YA/ NA. (4-5 stars) Layla Messing-Barnes & Noble;
    "Golden" by Kathryn Robson was such a great find! I'm so happy I discovered this author, and I love how long of an ebook it is!! I like that I can really lose myself in the story and with the fascinating characters. Robson's writing is very descriptive and I felt like I was really inside this unique world the author created. I liked that it made me think outside the box and wasn't just another formulaic vampire story. This was really original, I thought, but at the same time comfortingly familiar. My only beef was that it felt like it took too long to get going (even though there is good action at the beginning), for there to be the tension needed to really hook us in to having to keep reading. At times I thought some of Amy's inner narrative went on a bit too long (too much 'telling') and there were some minor editing things I noticed. But despite that I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next book from Kathryn Robson soon. Definitely recommend for fans of YA paranormal & fantasy. (4 stars) Laura Clarke-Barnes & Noble;
    "Golden" by Kathryn Robson is a really good read with an interesting concept and some of the best narrative and prose I've come across in a long while..... And just when I thought I was done with vampires forever and had read every possible angle they could take. Make no mistake, there are plenty of subplots happening here, At times I almost felt like it was too much, although the author describes it very well, and I know it's instrumental to the overall storyline and with what is happening with the main characters. It's just sometimes seemed like overkill when I would've preferred to maybe see a deeper emotional relationship build between the characters instead. This is a great combination of a character driven literary novel as well as an action-packed one, and there is great energy that whisks us along. The thing that struck me the most was just how genuine and authentic it all came across... most of the time when reading fantasy/paranormal you really feel that you are reading something completely made up. But here it feels almost true-to life. In a frighteningly good way. Curious to see if there will be more books like this and where they will go. The ending seems to leave room open for more, but I don't really see any mention. (4 stars). Jhonni Parker--Goodreads;
    "GOLDEN" is the first book I've read from this author, but it came highly recommended from a person whose opinion I trust. Not only was I not disappointed, I was even more impressed with it than I'd expected to be! I loved Kathryn Robson's storytelling abilities and style of writing--the distinctive 'voice'. It is so simple and easy to read, but each sentence and page packs so much emotion and imagery that you really get a bang for your buck. "Golden" is an intoxicating work of creativity, passion, sensuality, and imagination. It stretches the boundaries for this type of fiction in new ways that really impressed me. I read paranormal and fantasy all the time, (and a lot of vamp fiction) but this one stood out to me as being exceptionally well written and feeling fresh and original. I finished it in three days which is practically a record for me because I'm a slow reader with not much time and this is a pretty long book. But I couldn't put it down! I was happy with the ending, but I really wish there were more! Recommend for older readers and fans of YA and NA paranormal. (5 stars) Megan King--Goodreads;
    I do read a lot of books by lesser known authors (I like to give them a chance and maybe discover new talent). But inevitably I'm left disappointed more often than not. But even if Ms. Robson's novel, "Golden" wasn't perfect, it delivered an entertaining ride with complex ideas that pulls you in and makes you emotionally invested whether you want to or not. I enjoyed the author's energetic and passionate writing, but also the characters themselves (even the bad ones) and there are plenty! For the most part the pacing was good, I did think there was too much telling backstory in the beginning with Amy and Andras that slowed it down a bit after the exciting opener, and at times the narrative dragged a bit. But I liked that it was unpredictable and not completely cliché, and I enjoyed it all the way through and thought it was a great New Adult fantasy-romance. (4 stars) Darlene Cupp-Barnes & Noble;

    I read tons of paranormal novels, so I already had the bar set pretty high in my mind for them. I am so happy that I wasn't at all disappointed with "Golden"! I think I even liked this one a bit more than normal--- I enjoyed the real world/fantasy world blend but still had that strong magical/paranormal element. I loved how I was able to totally lose myself in this unique and imaginative world that is so much fun! Love picturing how the characters (especially Amy) look, and I could totally see this being a movie or something. Hope the series continues! Recommend for fans of NA fantasy and paranormal romance. (4-5 stars) Gillian Hancock--Goodreads
    "Golden" by Kathryn Robson takes us on a magical and dangerous and sexy journey. The beginning starts innocently enough, but the way the story unfolds and how everything is connected pulls you in and takes you to another world. I have to say I really liked reading this and like the author's writing style a lot. I really felt like I was there in Amy's head (for better or worse) and even though there are some disturbing elements (one scene in particular should have a trigger warning), and the scenes are pretty fantastical, there is a level of believability there that makes reading these books a magical, rewarding, almost surreal experience. I'm happy to have discovered this author and will recommend them to fans of YA fiction, romance, fantasy, and paranormal. (4 stars) Brenda Maxwell--Goodreads;
    As much as I enjoyed this book, "Golden" I think I also felt like it was a little confusing at times, and the pacing was too erratic. I'm not a fan of all the internal thoughts, (Amy's) as for me that is far too much 'telling' when it should be 'showing'.... It's not as bad as some books I've seen, but I find it tiresome after a while. Also it could benefit from some light proofreading. But I really like the creative take on vampire lore and liked the setting. The writing and the plot is amazing. I do hope that the story will continue as the "Golden" character is a great deal of fun to read about. (3-4 stars) Tabitha Parks-Indie Book Reviewers

    "Golden" was so unique and original, it really was unlike anything I'd read, and in a good way!! It had so many interesting plot twists and was sexy and dangerously addicting!! Once I got into the book it was impossible to put down, and once I finished I immediately looked for the next one (Where is it??) A must read for fans of paranormal, light romance and New Adult. (5 stars) Essie Harmon--Barnes & Noble;
    "Golden" is the first book I've read from this author Kathryn Robson, but I certainly hope it's not the last. I appreciate how after the enticing opener, Robson continues to come up with new and imaginative twists, and the action never slows down at all. Even when it does for a bit, it is usually to work on the Character development (Amy) and grant the reader deeper insight into her psyche. So many complex interweaving plotlines keep you guessing, and wow, Daniel is a sexy beast! Love the original myth Robson employs in her vampire/demon/monster lore and while I do wish some backstory could be narrowed down some, I loved reading this and Love Amy and Daniel and hope their story continues on! (4 stars) Darla Ortiz--Goodreads;

    Give Me More Golden.
    By Nicole May
    First of all, the cover of this book is stunning. The woman, the flower, the design is magnificent. That sucked me in from the first moment I saw it. Secondly, from the very first page, Robson's Golden had me wanting to read more. Lately I've had a bit of a thing against Vampire novels because, to be honest, none have impressed me and come up rather boring. But Golden turned that all around for me. I love the main character, Amy, and I can guarantee you this book has some twists and turns you won't be expecting!

    I gave Robson's Golden five stars. I loved her writing style. I loved the fast pace of this book. And the characters were well developed. I would read another book by Kathryn Robson any day!

    What a page turner - Fantastic different spin on Vampirism
    By Laura
    Well, what do I say, do you like the Supernatural? This one has it all, the only one missing is a werewolf, but maybe there will be a second installment with them running amok? Demons, Vampires and a agonizing love interest. Fast paced and well written, loved every second and was reading till the early hours of the morning. Had me gripped from the first page and it did not slow down. Fantastic different spin on Vampirism I haven't seen before, which was very interesting. Definitely would recommend to anyone who liked books like Insurgent, The maze runner, or The Hunger Games

    For anyone who believes in the potential for artistry in the realm of food, Culinary Artistry is a must-read. This is the first book to examine the creative process of culinary composition as it explores the intersection of food, imagination, and taste. Through interviews with more than 30 of America's leading chefsa including Rick Bayless, Daniel Boulud, Gray Kunz, Jean-Louis Palladin, Jeremiah Tower, and Alice Watersa the authors reveal what defines "culinary artists," how and where they find their inspiration, and how they translate that vision to the plate. Through recipes and reminiscences, chefs discuss how they select and pair ingredients, and how flavors are combined into dishes, dishes into menus, and menus into bodies of work that eventually comprise their cuisines.

    Amazon.com Review
    If you really find food fascinating--the idea of food, working with food, and the eating of food--then Culinary Artistry should be on your bookshelf. There are two books at work here. One is What Chefs Have to Say About the Foods They Create. The other is Fun with Food Spread Sheets. A cynic might suggest that after putting together Becoming a Chef, the authors had so much leftover interview material that Culinary Artistry was but the natural outcome. The chef's point of view, however, would be to make use of everything passing through the kitchen, to throw nothing away. In other words, if Becoming a Chef is an entrée, then Culinary Artistry is the special of the day.

    The book is divided into sections that discuss and reach out to chefs to join in that discussion of such ideas as the chef as artist, dealing with sensory perception in food, composing with flavors, putting a dish together, putting together an entire menu, and standing back to admire the growth of a personal cuisine. This is thoughtful material. It is not how-to material. These guided conversations are made practical for the home cook by charts such as which foods are in season and when, the basic flavors of foods (bananas are sweet; anchovies are salty), food matches made in heaven (lamb chops with aioli or ginger or shallots), seasoning matches made in heaven (dill and salmon), flavors of the world (Armenia means parsley and yogurt), common accompaniments to entrées (beef and potatoes), and, most fun of all, the desert-island lists of many of the chefs quoted so extensively throughout the text. Many recipes accompany the text.

    How this will affect any individual's own culinary art, be that professional or personal, remains unclear. It may be as private an experience as reading. For the uninitiated, this book will prove that there's a lot more going on with food and restaurants and chefs than they may ever have imagined. --Schuyler Ingle

    March 2015

    Dear Readers,

    On the heels of winning the James Beard Award for Best Writing on food for our first book BECOMING A CHEF (1995), our second book CULINARY ARTISTRY (1996) wasn't nominated for a single award upon its publication.

    Over time, however, CULINARY ARTISTRY went on to become one of the most influential culinary books on professional chefs and experienced home cooks alike -- not just across the United States, but around the world.  It's now considered a classic.

    Last year, Southern Living magazine's cookbook editor Sarah Gleim named CULINARY ARTISTRY one of the "Top 10 Must-Have Cookbooks" -- a list that also featured our James Beard Award winner THE FLAVOR BIBLE.

    In January 2015, the judges of TV's "Chopped" (Canada) named CULINARY ARTISTRY one of "18 Must-Own Cookbooks."

    And just this month, we were thrilled to see Food & Wine magazine feature CULINARY ARTISTRY as one of the "Best Cookbooks of All Time."  (We were also delighted to see Milwaukee magazine cite CULINARY ARTISTRY in this month's cover story as one of the four books that most inspire the city's best chefs.)

    Classic books are classic for a reason -- their wisdom endures, whether or not they ever had the good fortune of an award medallion gracing their cover.

    We hope you'll treat yourself to the wisdom of dozens of America's best chefs (including Rick Bayless, Daniel Boulud, Hubert Keller, Patrick O'Connell, Nancy Silverton, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Alice Waters) featured in CULINARY ARTISTRY.

    Delicious wishes,
    Karen Page & Andrew Dornenburg

    Cooking is an art but..
    By Daniel Teti
    Being a true food & wine lover and amateur cook, I do not regret having got this book but there are some aspects that should not be disregarded as the title can be a bit misleading.
    First of all, although it was clear from the start, it is not a cookbook at all. Far from it, it is neither a book on the techniques every cook should know nor a collection of useful or good recipes. It is rather a reference book for food lovers and potentially for chefs.

    Food matching is the most interesting section of the book. No doubt this is the perfect book for somebody who is not looking for specific dishes or ingredients, but for inspiration. However, having already bought "The Flavor Bible", you will notice that Culinary Artistry not only has some overlapping with `the bible" but also is rather incomplete. That is quite disappointing...

    Admittedly, this book is quite useful for a reference concerning matching different food, although many of the matchs look standard, and any chef should know what goes with what. In all cases, it can be a good place to find ideas, or to remember food combinations, and the tables are very clear.

    The biggest complaint - to the extent I was about to ask for a replacement or refund, is that, having received the book by mail, I could not notice that the book has rough uncut irregular edges making it impossible to browse through its pages. I also wonder whether I got a faulty or second hand book.
    It comes as a surprise as the book deals with presentation and sense-inviting meals (e.g. flat food vs. architectural presentation)

    As to the paper quality and the presentation itself, don't expect a great thing: it lacks pictures showing the artistic presentation of the finished plates.Certainly presentation is in my opinion part of food artistry.

    WOW, I know what all my foodie friends are getting for xmas
    By Amalfi Coast Girl
    A serious foodie that has been perfecting her cooking skills for the last 25 years in her home kitchen writes this review. My favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America. I am also a cookbook collector, with more than 500 books in my cooking library. With the many books in my cookbook collection I find that I am frequently disappointed in my recent purchases. That was not the case with this purchase.

    I was absolutely blown away by this book. I read the entire book in one sitting, fixating on each new idea. I have never enjoyed another book as much as I have enjoyed this one. If you are one of those people that never follows a recipe as written (guilty as charged) you are going to love this book. This book might just be my new favorite cookbook. Although this book is not a cookbook in the most literal sense of the word, it is more a guide to cooking than a cookbook. Yes, there are recipes in the book, but not as many as a traditional cookbook.

    The book is subdivided as follows:

    The Chef as Artist
    Meet Your Medium
    Composing Flavors
    Composing a Dish
    a. Why Food Matches
    b. Food Matches Made in Heaven
    c. Seasoning Matches in Heaven
    Composing a Menu
    a. Common Accompaniments to Entrees
    Evolving a Cuisine
    a. The Evolution of Leading Chef's Cuisines
    b. Dessert Island Lists
    Culinary Art as Communion
    Resources

    The tables that are included in this book are amazing. I have already copied some of the tables and moved them into my kitchen to use this evening with dinner. The table that the authors titled "Flavor Pals" is just wonderful. If you have ever been in the kitchen and wondered if particular spices and/or herbs go together, there is a table that answer those questions. There is another table titled "Flavor Enemies" that is extremely helpful. If you have ever tried to make Sauterne and Oranges because you didn't have peaches and wondered what went wrong, you know there are just some things that don't play well together. The table tells you which combinations are difficult to get right. There are too many tables in the book to discuss them all. But suffice it to say; I think that all the tables are fantastic.

    I will be ordering more of these for all my foodie friends that love to cook. This book would help anyone that loves to cook, and doesn't want to be constrained by a recipe. There is a great comment by Todd English that sums up how I feel about recipes, it is as follows, "having to follow a recipe was, to him, like being put on a leash." If this sums up your philosophy, quick buy the book. You will not be sorry.
