Hidden Treasure

Hidden in a genre full of raunchy porn pretending to be good fiction I stumbled on Captive Prince. I always look at the reviews but take them with a grain of salt. Although there were only nine reviews they were all 5 star. I decided to take a chance. I'm so thankful that I did. This book is so much bigger than it's classification as erotic fiction would imply. I was completely engrossed from the start. The use of language coupled with imaginative world building will leave you desperate for more. I know it's sometimes hard to separate the wheat from the chaff but you will not be disappointed if you buy this book.

I just finished the last page of this wonderful book and the third one isn't out yet! I love this series! Compulsively readable I could not put this down. While reading the first volume I instantly purchased the second book before I was halfway through the first. This series has everything. Politics, intrigue, fascinating characters, snappy dialogue. S. U. Pacat, you got me! (: I hardly ever write reviews. Almost never, but this was so good I had to just let everyone know about it.

Gorgeous writing

*profound but unavoidable spoilers*

Amazing character driven tale. If it's remotely your cup of tea - a brilliant, beautiful, cold, manipulative prince with hidden vulnerabilities and the honest honorable hero who loves him (the love is the spoiler - it's a slow boil romance but really... no reader can fail to be aware where this story is going) and the politics and violence they face - it's as good as it gets. Plenty of plot that goes very nicely and well developed characters abound and the hero is quite nice and about 100% less annoying than these kinds of heros usually are but really this book is all about Laurent (said brilliant, beautiful, manipulative...), if you love a Laurent kind of character do not miss this novel.

Ratliff, a music critic for the New York Times, presents essays on what he considers the 100 most important jazz recordings. In each, he discusses a recording's merits and shortcomings and includes a list of its performers. He seems to address the younger or potential jazz fan; otherwise, how could one explain his comparisons of mid-20th century jazz performances to those of Nirvana and Sonic Youth? Straight and to the point, Ratliff acts as an advocate for what he sees as a popular art form in need of an infusion of interest. This informative book is heavy on obvious albums by Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, and Charlie Parker, but the inclusion of Jeanne Lee, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, "Baby Face" Willette, and present-day phenomenon Jason Moran illustrates Ratliff's catholic view of the jazz genre. Also included is a list (title, main performer, date, and record label information only) of a second 100 recordings. This might not be a book that jazz fans will buy for their personal libraries-they have probably already formed their own tastes and list of favorites-but as a guide for the uninitiated it is essential for academic music libraries and public libraries large and small. It would also be most useful for collection development librarians building a well-rounded jazz CD collection.

Ratliff's essential jazz-records book separates itself from the herd at once by starting its chronological listing with The Creators of Jazz by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the white outfit that ever since it recorded jazz first has been tarred for crudely ripping off black music. Ratliff defends the ODJB's music making as well as its historic importance while granting that its leader may have been the worst racist in jazz history. Later, he includes, with warm appreciation, Latin jazz players Chano Pozo, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, and Moacir Santos, who aren't even listed in some huge jazz record guides. He has smart and persuasive essays on why underrated popular jazzmen John Kirby, Ahmad Jamal, and "Baby Face" Willette deserve places in the pantheon. He even gives the nod to difficult, dissonant experimenters Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, and Evan Parker, whom many jazz historians barely tolerate. All that, and Armstrong, Ellington, Holiday, Basie, Tatum, "Bird," Monk, Mingus, Miles, and the others everybody expects to be in on this jam, too. Damn good book. Ray Olson

Decent introduction to jazz

The recommendations in this book are all solid and classic. The brief essays about the recordings are fairly erudite, but I find the tone slightly pretentious at times. I agree with another reviewer in that he tends to write about himself instead of striving for a more objective description of the recordings.

Obviously, a list of 100 recordings cannot begin to justice to the enormous quantity of jazz available. Ratliff's list concentrates more on established "classics" than on modern players -- you will not find Brad Mehldau, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, or Nick Payton. Nor will you find more "approachable" but great contemporary musicians such as Kurt Elling and Luciana Souza. Because of this, I do not recommend the guide to someone who wants to get an idea of where jazz is right now. It is more of a historical introduction than a guide for modern listeners. This is not meant as criticism; that is probably what Ratliff intended.

Overall, this book would be a decent place to start for the jazz newbie (or even for the seasoned listener, who may have neglected some or many of these recordings).

The reviews here have been too harsh to this book. This book is not meant by any strech to be a replacement for the Penguin Jazz on CD Guide, but as a list and analysis of 100 very good jazz CDs it isn't bad at all. The reviews are generally insightful and informative, and the book contains a fine balance of big band, be-bop, and post-bop, with all the colours in between. (His defense of Cecil Taylor is particularly refreshing.) I might quibble with the title, but no list of 100 CDs will satisfy every reader as including all the "essentials." The main list, combined with the additional 100 CDs listed in the appendix, would provide enough listening enjoyment for a lifetime.

A Clear, Helpful Introduction to Buying Jazz Today

Ratliff's style is accessible, direct, and relevant to younger folks hoping to discover jazz recordings of merit. One of his themes is that jazz can both be good art and entertain at the same time, which is fantastic in my view because too many folks are intimidated by "America's classical music." Buy this book and you'll reference it a hundred times when hoping to expand your knowledge of the music, I guarantee.

Good Book

This book is an excellent source of music for the movie, Spirit. My daughter loves the pictures and loves to hear her favorite songs being played on the piano. It is hard to get the book away from her to practice. I do wish there were more pictures. There are just a few. This would not be a good buy if the person is just getting the book for their child to look at the pictures.

These are my FAVORITE songs (from my favorite movie) and I play piano

Firstly, this sheet music is hard to find. All sheet music is, unless you are at a sheet music store, and even then, I hadn't seen it anywhere but the internet when I ordered it.

This paper-back book has all the songs from the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack (as you can tell from the details), as well as a couple of Hans Zimmer's instrumentals.

After ordering this, my only worry was that the piano/vocal/guitar style of music would be a hindrance to playing and/or a compromise to the quality of the sound. This was not the case. The notes sound exact and are not compromised or simplified in any way. This is as exact as transcription gets.

The music is written on three clefs: a vocal line and two piano lines, one for the melody and the other for the harmony. There are also chords written above the staves for those who prefer a less exact, perhaps easier-to-play sound.

About the Author

John Hope Franklin was the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History, and for seven years was Professor of Legal History at Duke University Law School. A native of Oklahoma and a graduate of Fisk University (1935), he received the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Harvard University (1936 and 1941). He taught at a number of institutions, including Fisk, St. Augustine’s College, and Howard University. In 1956 he went to Brooklyn College as Chair of the Department of History; and in 1964, he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, serving as Chair of the Department of History from 1967 to 1970. At Chicago, he was the John Matthews Manly Distinguished Service Professor from 1969 to 1982, when he became Professor Emeritus.

Among his many published works are The Free Negro in North Carolina (1943), Reconstruction after the Civil War (1961), A Southern Odyssey (1971), and perhaps his best-known book, From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans, now in its ninth edition. In 1990 a collection of essays covering a teaching and writing career of fifty years was published as Race and History: Selected Essays, 1938-1988. At the time of his death in March 2009, he was engaged in research on "Dissidents on the Plantation: Runaway Slaves."

During his long career, Professor Franklin was active in numerous professional and educational organizations. For many years he served on the editorial board of the Journal of Negro History. He also served as president of the following organizations: The Southern Historical Association, the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Historical Association.

Dr. Franklin served on many national commissions and delegations, including the National Council on the Humanities, the President's Advisory Commission on Ambassadorial Appointments, and the United States delegation to the 21st General Conference of UNESCO. He was appointed by President Clinton to chair the President's Advisory Board for the One America initiative in June 1997.

He was the recipient of many honors. In 1978 Who's Who in America selected him as one of eight Americans who has made significant contributions to society. In 1995 he received the first W.E.B. DuBois Award from the Fisk University Alumni Association, the Organization of American Historians' Award for Outstanding Achievement, the NAACP's Spingarn medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In addition to his many awards, Dr. Franklin received honorary degrees from more than one hundred colleges and universities.

Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham is the Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. She is currently chair of the Department of African and African American Studies and has held this position since 2006. Professor Higginbotham earned a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in American History, an M.A. from Howard University, and her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before coming to Harvard, she taught on the full-time faculties of Dartmouth, the University of Maryland, and the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, she was a Visiting Professor at Princeton University and New York University.

Professor Higginbotham's writings span diverse fields--African American religious history, women's history, civil rights, constructions of racial and gender identity, electoral politics, and the intersection of theory and history. She is co-editor with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., of the African American National Biography (2008)--a multivolume-reference work that presents African American history through the lives of people. Professor Higginbotham is the author of Righteous Discontent: The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church: 1880-1920 (1993), which won numerous book prizes and was also included among The New York Times Book Review's Notable Books of the Year in 1993 and 1994.

Dr. Higginbotham has received numerous awards. In April 2003 she was chosen by Harvard University to be a Walter Channing Cabot Fellow in recognition of her achievements and scholarly eminence in the field of history. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History awarded her the Carter G. Woodson Scholars Medallion in October 2008, and the Urban League awarded her the Legend Award in August 2008.

Of my many history courses, this is the book that I have learned the most from. In today's high tension race relations this book gives insight to the heritage that is so commonly misunderstood. Yes, we have come closer to unity but we also have so much more to go. History is repeating itself but under the cover of political correctness and misrepresentation of the facts. You have to read this and take in all of the atrocities that has lead up to the resentment that both sides must understand and overcome.

My daughter is using the book because it is required for her African American History course. She is finding it immensely informative and learning a lot about African American history. I remember this book from my college days and it was a very small paperback.which was recommended reading. Today it is a much larger and used as a complete textbook. Thanks for the update and new publication. It is a very worthy book which is atestiment to John Hope Franklin.

"We were there, too"

You've got to read this book to understand that it isn't just "A History of African Americans," it's a history of the people of this country.

I got it (the book) after learning of the 2009 death of the main author, John Hope Franklin, born in 1915. He was a very educated man, a professor at many colleges, and he was an African American, who wrote a lot.

"From Slavery to Freedom" was first published in 1947 ... when "Freedom" was still to be won - and he wrote about that battle for Freedom in eight subsequent editions. In the latest of those editions, he had a co-author, also African American and a professor, Alfred A. Moss, Jr.

We would hope that, in spite of Franklin's death, Prof. Moss will continue that journey. Because the journey continues .... in all of us.

Franklin said of the book, "My challenge was to weave into the fabric of American history enough of the presence of blacks so that the story of the United States could be told adequately and fairly." (The quote is from Wikepedia).

Of course, he could have said, "Throughout the history of America, we were there, too.

Take with a grain of salt

This was a mandatory book for a nursing course. The problem is with how specific instructors want to see you perform skills. It may differ from this book and I ended up just going with what my nursing instructor wanted more than this book in order to pass skills testing. Its good for skills that you don't go over in depth.
