About the Author
John Satzinger is a Professor in the Computer Information Systems department at Missouri State University. With teaching and research experience at leading CIS and MIS university programs since 1991, Dr. Satzinger provides a strong managerial focus and powerful vision for this text. His interests and specialties include systems analysis and design, graphical user interface design, object-oriented development, and database and client-server development. He earned his MBA from Cal Poly University and his Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate University.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Dr. Stephen Burd is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, where he has been teaching courses in management information systems, networks, databases, and hardware/software since 1984. The author of more than seven top-selling textbooks for Course Technology and Cengage Learning, Dr. Burd brings significant strengths and industry knowledge to this text. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore and his Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Worst.Textbook.Ever

A $200 textbook that didn't teach me anything Wikipedia couldn't have done for free. Terrible, terrible book. Only good news is that I can sell it back to Amazon at the end of the semester for about half of what I paid. Buy used if you have to have this book for class, like I did.

I did not like the way things were organized in this book

I did not like the way things were organized in this book. Many very important concepts in this book are lost within large blocks of small text without even changing the font. If you like to read these things word for word, go for it. You can learn these concepts online in a fraction of the time. I gave up on the book a third of the way through the semester and still scored an A. I just looked at what the chapter was going to teach and found well thought out powerpoints and pdf's from other universities to study.

Not the best text, but better than previous editions

I am taking this class in college that requires this book. I tried to get away with the 5th edition, but they were nothing alike. The instructor assigned questions at the end of the chapter that didn't exist in the 5th edition so I had to upgrade. I can say though that the 6th edition is MUCH better than the 5th edition. However, as far as IT textbooks go, this one kinda sucks. IMO

About the Author
RAYMOND A. NOE is the Robert and Anne Hoyt Designated Professor of Management at The Ohio State University. He was previously a professor in the Department of Management at Michigan State University and the Industrial Relations Center of the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. He received his BS in psychology from The Ohio State University and his MA and PhD in psychology from Michigan State University. Professor Noe conducts research and teaches undergraduate as well as MBA and PhD students in human resource management, managerial skills, quantitative methods, human resource information systems, training, employee development, and organizational behavior. He has published articles in the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Personnel Psychology. Professor Noe is currently on the editorial boards of several journals including Personnel Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Sharing his 40-plus years of experience in overhauling and refitting a myriad of different sailboats for offshore cruising, Berman offers straight-forward advice on rigging selection, engines, ground tackle, safety gear, electronics installations, and the hull. --Practical Sailor

Berman Review by Karen Larson Minneapolis, Minnesota The subtitle, Refitting Used Sailboats for Blue-Water Voyaging, of Peter Berman s new book, Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat, tells why it s an important new reference for good old boaters. Peter s basic premise is that new offshore cruising sailboats are prohibitively expensive and somewhat uncommon, while the market in used cruising sailboats is rich and vast and flourishing. There s something there for everyone. His 45-year experience as a cruiser in nearly a dozen different designs (CCA through modern racing designs) is enlightening. While Peter has formed strong opinions about many features, he does not recommend one design type over another. He knows, perhaps better than most, that every sailboat is a compromise and that priorities and budgets will vary from sailor to sailor. What he offers is a series of observations and a logical review of onboard systems that will help any prospective offshore cruiser consider the pros and cons of each system, feature, and sailboat type. In the end, the reader of Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat will be able to determine which features are personally important and which have a lower priority. I chuckled occasionally at Peter s dry wit but found that I didn t agree with every word of his sage advice. I m just one sailor, after all, with one set of values and preferences, but I was surprised, for example, to note that Peter overlooked the value of freshwater sailboats, as they apparently do not figure in the experience of this East Coast (and beyond) sailor. Peter starts his discussion of good used boats by ranking the most expensive systems: the rig, the engine, and the ground tackle. As these are the most expensive items to replace, he gives each system a thorough and thoughtful critique based on his experiences as a cruiser. There are many nuggets here for every would-be cruiser. In particular, he includes good tips about good and bad construction features in the rig, bearing in mind intended use for coastal vs. offshore work. This section clearly spells out features to look for if you will be cruising offshore. Over all, Peter offers great advice about buying a good old cruising sailboat and how to refit it for several more decades of offshore cruising adventures. Like the rest of us, Peter has conflicts about the best possible cruising sailboat. After saying that larger is always better, that system redundancy is critically important, and that you should replace practically everything before going offshore, Peter admits that his first cruiser was probably his favorite. A primitively equipped wooden Dickerson, this boat cost only $16,000, had fewer systems to maintain, and was his most affordable cruiser. After telling readers they should probably invest the purchase price of the boat in the refit, and to replace all the important and expensive systems, he reminds us that the first priority is to just go. Time is the enemy, he says, so don t spend your life in endless outfitting. In the end, as in all things, it s up to the reader to make his own choices based on his own list of priorities. But Peter offers great advice that may help each reader rank his own list of priorities and consider some systems and construction methods that he may not have thought about. If you re still searching for your offshore sailboat and juggling the hundreds of variables, Peter Berman a guy who s been there and done that has some very useful advice for you. Read this book. Our thoughts are that it is VERY in depth and very well put together. If a person is serious about putting together a used boat for extended offshore cruising this is a MUST read. The depth that this book covers would shame most and I use the word MOST surveyors. The best use for this book would probably be for the person who already has this type of boat that would use it as a guide to improve/repair. likely costs of restoring a cruising sailboat. Estimates are a little daunting when added all up but still

much less than a comparable new boat. A valuable corrective for the casual dreamer.

Very thorough and hard-headed analysis of what does and does not stand up to long-term offshore use in the writer's experience. Little good news here for current owners. Example: I thought auxiliary diesels were bulletproof: Nope, they're not made for the long haul. He does like in-mast furling, though. Go figure.

I'm surprised at how easy it is to read and how much I'm learning. I'm not sure if I'm learning new things or just putting a lot of things together in a more organized way of thinking. Either way I have learned enough to make it a good purchase. When you're going offshore you can never be too careful or too prepared. This is helping me get better organized and make better decisions about how I spend my money on the boat. I recommend it.

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics was published in 1993, just as "Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" articles were starting to appear and graphic novels were making their way into the mainstream, and it quickly gave the newly respectable medium the theoretical and practical manifesto it needed. With his clear-eyed and approachable analysis--done using the same comics tools he was describing--McCloud quickly gave "sequential art" a language to understand itself. McCloud made the simplest of drawing decisions seem deep with artistic potential.

Thirteen years later, following the Internet evangelizing of Reinventing Comics, McCloud has returned with Making Comics.

It gives you the basics.

McCloud's book does not pretend to give you ALL of the answers, nor does it pretend to be a textbook or an all-encompassing guide. There are other, more expensive books for those purposes.

McCloud's book is engaging, thorough, concise, entertaining, and well-planned. It is clear that he put this together with a lot of passion and thought. The concepts are straightforward (if sometimes "dumbed-down" a bit), and he provides theories, concepts, and practical knowledge about making comics. This is a GREAT place for beginners.

To clarify, there are books out there about how to draw, but this is NOT one of them. This is designed to help you learn to tell a story using pictures, words, and impressions. There are drawing tricks and suggestions, but they are presented within the larger goal of teaching you to convey emotions and provide meaning. He does not give you a step-by-step guide of how to draw objects or people.

The emphasis of this book is to give you advice for flow, framing, transitions, angles, word use, combinations of words and pictures, and tools to need to provide a good balance of clarity and intensity so the reader will understand your meaning and empathize with it.

This book is a great place to start, it is a great reference, and his other books are also great references. If you want to kick your story up a notch, read Understanding Comics by McCloud, and use some of the tools he explains. It will allow you to use the tricks of the trade to convey deeper meaning.

Don't hesitate

This book is outstanding and I'd rate it 10 stars if I could. I attended The School of Visual Arts in the late sixties and early seventies and took a course in humorous illustration there in the eighties, and as a freelance illustrator I've illustrated for some well-known publications. This book is a course unto itself of the highest quality - for the mere price of a book! It is packed with valuable information that would cost thousands to get in art school, and that's only if one were fortunate enough to have incredibly knowledgeable, dedicated teachers who are really skilled at teaching. In Making Comics you will not only learn about making comics but by virtue of the information McCloud gives about making comics, you should be able to infer a great deal about sequential visual art in general, and if you are so inclined you could then apply that to story-boarding, screenwriting, film-making, writing and illustrating children's books, etc. (I've been trying my hand at screenplay writing and though I didn't buy or expect this book to help me with that, it has helped me a great deal with that and I've found it more helpful than a few of the books on screenwriting I've read.)

The way Making Comics is laid out, you feel as if McCloud is right there with you on every page - and he is - not only as a wise teacher but as a friend. A book to be read and re-read and re-visited, that I can't recommend highly enough.

Invaluable Resource - Not Just for Artists!

I first came across this book in my junior year of college - it was assigned to my animation class as a textbook. When I opened it, I was caught off guard by the fact that the entire book is done in a comic format. As I read, however, the decision to teach visually could not have been more justified.

"Making Comics" is one of, if not the, best-written sources for understanding visual storytelling that the market has to offer. McCloud begins by explaining the nature of comics - what they are, what different kinds of comics there are - and branches into incredibly detailed coverage of every aspect of the process of creating a comic. McCloud walks the reader through the mechanics of comics (how to frame, write, and illustrate comics most effectively) into the more tricky technical area of facial expressions and how to draw them with clear, practical, and humorous voice. Often, he will illustrate the points he makes within his own comic panels, or in a didactic side panel next to his own commentary. McCloud's guidance extends to how words interact with the art, how to create believable settings, understanding the available tools for creating comics, and a final overview of understanding the world of comics and the many different genres they branch into.

To wit, this is a book I've returned to time and time again for reference - and I'm not a professional comic artist by any stretch. This is a valuable piece of reference material for anyone interested in storytelling, expression through visual means, and even some basic human psychology. Whether you're brand new to graphic novels or a longtime fan, this book will forever change how you experience comics in all their shapes and forms.

Simple Layout, Good Exercises

I like the unintimidating format for my students: a very simple grammar explanation followed by enough exercises to reinforce the point, all neatly lined-up on one page. I have used these exercises to supplement those in the texts I was using, but I thing next year I'll try this book all alone.

Great for Getting to the Next Level

I've been a pretty basic Excel user since I started taking finance and accounting courses to supplement my math degree. But I've never really needed to do anything besides using the sum function and doing some quick calculations--and honestly, I had no idea how much more there was that Excel could do without getting into VBA coding.

I checked out a few other books, and most of the things I found were either way too basic--teaching you how to use Excel as a calculator and walking you through data entry--or assumes were are already a hard-core power user who needs to dive into VBA. Neither of these really fit me. It walks you through the use and uses for the major functions--with plenty of examples and a ton of downloadable spreadsheets through the companion websites--before moving onto things like arrays (I thought that was just a MatLab thing!), pivot tables, goal seek, and linear and non-linear regressions, before finishing off with some chapters applying it all to finance. I haven't gone through the finance chapters yet, so I can't say that I won't revise my review downward if those chapters aren't as good, but if I do I doubt it will be more than just one star.

My only complaint is that it can be a little light on explanations. I don't always know why something is working the way it is, or why something won't work the I assume it should be. As an example, I was struggling to work through a problem using logical operators with arrays. With a little Googling I found that Excel is very limited handling logical operators with arrays. The book never told me this, and I haven't found a real good explanation as to why this is yet.

I'm using a slightly older version of Excel--2007, and I have only run into a couple things that haven't worked. There are a couple of functions that are in 2013 that are not in 2007, but I have been able to VBA codes online that create that function. Overall, I'm very happy with this and plan on moving on to either Mr Excel's VBA and Macros or Power Programming with VBA.

Thorough and comprehensive

I haven't yet found a question that this guide doesn't resolve. The TOC and Index have been invaluable in quickly locating topics. I thought I knew Excel well (18 years experience in training, assessing and supporting it), but almost from the outset I started learning new tips and tricks. I'm also finding out what I don't know. The book is written in "layman's" terms, and there've been many a Sunday afternoon where I read this for relaxation rather than a novel. If that makes me a nerd, so be it!

A relatively good book on how to get into Excel, for beginners. The thing with Excel is that, once you get your feet wet, there's no need for books, because every possible question is answered online by others who encountered the same question or challenge before you did. Then again, anything that lowers the initial threshold into this powerful program is a good thing, so three stars.
