I very much enjoyed this book. "Calm, Cool, Collected" is about how to build character and inner strength over a long period of one's life. It is about refusing to accept negativity and enabling oneself to achieve. As always, David's style is light yet bold, fun yet to-the-point. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
David Emory Shi is a professor of history and the president emeritus of Furman University. He is the author of several books on American cultural history, including the award-winning The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850–1920.

Holly Mayer is associate professor of history, Chair of the History Department, and Director of the Historical Studies Graduate Program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Holly’s Ph.D. is from the College of William and Mary. Her research field is late eighteenth-century America, and she is especially interested in civil-military relations during the War for Independence and the evolution of American character and culture. Her monograph , Belonging to the Army: Camp Followers and Community during the American Revolution (1996) is a path-breaking study of the Continental Army as a community.

Japanese Grammer: a pillar for becoming proficient

I have been studying Japanese on my own. Being in a line of work where self-study is a requirement for advancement, I needed a resource that would help explain the general structure of the Japanese language, so I could organize a plan for acquiring the language at my own pace. This book is one of those pillars. If you have a solid knowledge of the hiragana and a basic yet formal understanding of the syntax of written Japanese, this book will work for you. On each page, the kanji are presented with rubi the FIRST time. After that, you have to remember the reading just for that page. The rubi is repeated elsewhere. Lack of kanji memorization is not a hindrance to using this book. The illustrations are basic diagrams in black and white that explain the sentence structure. There are no pictures of people, locations,etc.

The author does a clinical, yet thorough job of explaining how the Japanese language is organized. It helps you to anchor yourself in the sea of words and sounds. The explanations do not require expertise in linguistics. It is not leisure reading but persistence should pay off.
The key is getting clued into the organization of the foreign language so you can identify your weak spots and better direct your studies: particles/postpositions, verbal and adjectival types, etc. You do not need to be an expert in everything at once. But the basic grammar is important if you want to be a fluent speaker. This will not automatically make you speak fluent Japanese. That takes time, practice and LANGUAGE CDS. But, it may help you with listening and reading comprehension of authentic Japanese. You want to understand enough to build up the confidence that you can become a competent reader, writer and speaker of Japanese.

Absolutely excellent

I've been studying Japanese for 20 years, and I own many grammar books. If I had to pick two of the best, this would be one of them, along with "Using Japanese" which I also review here on Amazon. This covers all the basic and intermediate grammar you would need in order to communicate comfortably in every day life and beyond. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about this book. It is well-structured, thorough, and gives tons of examples for each grammatical concept. If you want a good reference book to come back to for years to come, this won't let you down.

The State-of-the-Art

I just finished reading this book, and I have to say that it is head-and-shoulders above every other log home construction book I've read. The illustrations are superb, and the tone of the text is very objective and factual. In contrast to books with the "this is how I've been building log homes for XXX years" attitude, Chambers' approach is "I didn't invent it, but so far this is the best way I've found to do this particular task. If I find somebody else doing it a better way in the future I'll start doing it that way." Chambers not only isn't afraid of not-invented-here ideas, he positively embraces them! There is even a chapter on the structural engineering of log trusses, written by a structural engineer (fancy that).

Chambers also covers the subject comprehensively, from the highest-level ideas (his chapter on settling is fascinating) to the lower-level details (proper chainsaw stance for cutting the lateral groove, for instance).

Let me contrast this a bit with Mackie's "Owner-Built Log Home". Mackie's book is a good read, because he's a terrific wordsmith and he really conveys the pleasure of building your own log home. But his illustrations aren't nearly as clear as Chambers', and he tends to write for an audience that already understands a lot of wood joinery terminology and procedures. "Then we did this, and this, and this," and I'm like, "whoa, did you skip a few steps there?" I often found myself re-reading a page several times because I just couldn't envision what he was doing in my mind's eye. Chambers never leaves you wondering.

I think both books have a place on your bookshelf, but if you really want to learn the most hands-on information in a single book, this is the one.

Log Construction Manual: The Ultimate Guide to Building Handcrafted Log Homes is an excellent book. lots of details and great narration. I am building my own log house. the information is very informative.

In need of update

This is an excellent "Manual". Most all the info you need if you want to build a hand scribed round log cabin,but no color pictures. If your looking for technical building info this is your book. I bought almost every book available on log homes building and I wouldn't be with out this if you plan to build one yourself. Not much on house plans or pic's though.
