Volume 1 of a three-volume series compares in novel format an IEE deployment to the programs of Lean, Lean Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), and the Balanced Scorecard. This comparison shows the benefits of the IEE over these traditional problem-solving-business and scorecard programs.

Described is an IEE Enterprise process Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (E-DMAIC) system, which helps avoid organizational sub-optimizations. The described IEE E-DMAIC system creates process improvement metrics needs that pull for the creation of process improvement projects, which follow a (project) P-DMAIC roadmap.

Volume 2 then describes the step-by-step execution of the E-DMAIC roadmap, while Volume 3 describes execution of the P-DMAIC roadmap.

Very good if you are a golfer, but tough if you are not. Buy it if you didn't undestand the black book (1st of the series)

Due to the fact that I don't know how to play golf (nor its rules) it was difficult to follow that book. Fortunately much of it, is Golf free. I give 3/5 on this part.

If you read The IEE An Enhanced, Unified Approach to Balanced Scorecards, Strategic Planning, and Business Improvement (the black book) you could avoid this one since it repeats the same concepts in a different way.

There are however few application examples which give you an overview of what IEE & six sigma is all about. I give 5/5 on this part.

A clever use of the business narrative to provide valuable information and counsel

Actually, this is the second of a four-volume set of books written by Forrest Breyfogle III, with the first volume (The Integrated Enterprise Excellence System: An Enhanced, Unified Approach to Balanced Scorecards, Strategic Planning, and Business Improvement) providing an overview on the other three. What is identified as Volume I is the only one in which Breyfogle explains the basics of the Integrated Enterprise Excellence system (IEE) in the form of a 144-page novella. Briefly, the IEE system is set of management techniques that when effectively implemented improve an organization's measurement and improvement system so that there is an increase in predictable and sustainable bottom-line benefits. The IEE system embeds a set of best practices derived from the strengths of past systems--applying structured metrics and a no nonsense roadmap to initiate process improvement and achieve substantial benefits. IEE takes Lean Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard to the next level in the pursuit of enterprise excellence.

In two earlier works that I read and then reviewed, Implementing Six Sigma, Second Edition: Smarter Solutions Using Statistical Methods (2003) and Managing Six Sigma: A Practical Guide to Understanding, Assessing, and Implementing the Strategy That Yields Bottom-Line Success (2000) co-authored with James Cupello and Becki Meadows, Breyfogle indicates that he is a pragmatic optimist in that he is determined to know what does and does not work (also why and why not) but he also believes that all human initiatives can be improved. He seems driven to share everything he has learned with as many people as possible. In my opinion, that is why his explanations are so specific and so thorough as well as anchored in real-world situations. This book offers an excellent case in point. Breyfogle organizes his material with meticulous care within twelve chapters that function on two separate but related levels of development: four college classmates who now occupy important executive positions play a round of golf and share their thoughts about the parallels between improving one's game and improving one's business. He also includes a Glossary and References.

This is probably (and deliberately) the most accessible and most entertaining of the four volumes in the IEE series, in large measure because of its format as a business narrative. It has a cast of characters, a plot, emerging conflicts, unexpected developments, apparent resolution of at least some conflicts, and then Breyfogle's version of what in a play would be described as "falling action," when some degree of closure is achieved in the last chapter, "The 19th Hole." There can never be finality to simplification and improvement initiatves because they comprise a continuous process. Therefore, the nature and extent of relevance of Breyfogle's insights and counsel will have sustainable value as new applications of them are revealed.

Makes Lean Six Sigma easy to understand, good story!

"The Basics" is a novel about a group of golf buddies who are going through problems within the companies that they are managing and how they shared experiences on how using Six Sigma Lean has helped them get out of trouble. While not going into too much statistical details, the book also gives clear definitions of the tools used at each phase of a Six Sigma lean project. The allegorical explanation of DOE for instance makes it very simple for anyone to not understand its meaning but also to be able to think about situations where it can be employed.
The approach used by Breyfogle in that book reminds me of Goldratt's way of teaching a complex subjects through a story. It is very practical and easy to understand.

Best your going to find

Having seen many texts on transport phenomena, Mills is definitely one of the best. Heat and mass transfer is a jumble of many different topics and applications, but Mills manages to give the subject some cohesion and derives most important results from the basic conservation equations. Heat and mass transfer are inherently convoluted because they so frequently fuse theoretical and experimental ideas. Anyone who complains about this text has not seen the other crap that lurks out there. The problem with most of these cover-all textbooks is they cram too much into one text and lack a logical progression of ideas. Nonetheless, Mills is probably the best book out there for an undergrad introductory transport class.

Excellent Text

I had the plesure of using this book while an undergrad at UCLA taking both the transport class and an intermediate heat transfer class with Professor Mills. He, like his text, were thorough and to the point. I never found myself lost in his book due to his excellent explanations on difficult subject matter. Don't expect this subject to be easy - it's anything but that. However, this book does an excellent job of treating many complicated physical systems as well as can be expected.

Not a bad choice for an undergrad text

This was the book used when I took heat transfer. I found it to be a good supplement to the lectures and do still refer to it. I wish Mills spent more time on using numerical analysis.

I was worried at first, but she pulled it off

I'm a pretty big fan of Fuchsias, having discovered her cookbooks when going through some nasty chinese food withdrawals in Texas after a move from NYC. Having been a chef, and not finding the Chinese food I craved, I set out to create, myself, what I needed. Ms Dunlop's books were by far above and beyond the other books I tried. Unlike most people, I preferred her second book Revolutionary chinese cookbook (Hunan recipes) over Land of Plenty (Sichuan), and when her first new book in seven years was coming out I pre-ordered it asap. It arrived two weeks before its release date (!) and I opened it up to...a recipe I already knew??
General Tso's chicken, on page 122, I didn't need. First of all it's already on page 120 of Revolutionary, and I know it by heart, having cooked it about eight times a year for years. The next recipe I see is Pock-Marked Old Woman's Tofu...Hmm, I know that one too. It's on page 313 of Land of Plenty. Then I read the introduction and she's retelling a story that's in her memoir Shark's fin and Sichuan pepper! Damn, her third cookbook is a greatest hits?
Not quiet. I was shocked at first, but the Pock-Marked tofu was a new vegetarian version, the book is a lot thicker than the last two (and I needed to dig more, I guess), and her General Tso's chicken is so good, it's ok to publish it twice. She noted in the end of her memoir she was thinking of going vegetarian, and a lot of these recipes are light on meat, or none at all. But the main emphases in this book are on lighter, healthier, more cost effective Chinese recipes, not on her own personal diet.
I've already cooked a few recipes, and have read a bunch more, I'm impressed. A lot of work has gone into this book. My only complaint is I've had trouble finding some of her ingredients here, even when I wrote down the English and Chinese names of what I needed, and asked for help from my local huge Chinese grocery store. But her list is a British version of Chinese ingredients that I'm looking for in Texas...I'll make up what I can't find (read Melissa Clark's cookbooks for the fine art of making it up as you go along). Well done, Fuchsia, you've impressed me again.

I wanted to love this book, but...

I am a long-time Dunlop fan (my "Land of Plenty" is falling apart at this point). Given how much I adore her Sichuan and Hunan cookbooks, I really, really wanted to love this book -- I literally ordered it within five minutes of knowing about its existence! Having explored this book for the last couple of weeks, however, I am very sad to admit that I feel quite "meh" about it.

Most obviously (and as other reviewers have already pointed out), many recipes are repetitions or variants of those contained in her previous books. While this might make the book more complete as a stand-alone cookbook, it gets quite tedious for those of us with complete Dunlop collections.

This book has some minor annoyances, including weight measurements for small amounts of peanuts, ginger, etc. -- I find the teaspoon/tablespoon/ballpark approach from her previous books far more practical. Also, some directions are quite strange: wilting spinach before stir-frying seemed like an interesting idea, but yielded no practical difference (in my opinion).

More disturbingly, I have found that many of the dishes in this book just don't taste that good and/or are very uninteresting. Out of the dishes I've cooked from this book so far, I'd say that about 40% were "meh" (required additional soy sauce/vinegar/sesame oil/chicken powder to be palatable -- probably wouldn't cook them again), 40% were "alright" (will cook them once in a while), and only 20% were "great" (loved it -- will add to my list of frequently repeated favorites). In contrast, I would put the breakdown for Dunlop's other cookbooks at about 5% "meh", 25% "alright" and 70% "great". For your information, the smoked tofu with celery and peanuts, cold chicken with a spicy Sichuanese sauce, tiger salad, stir-fried tofu with black beans and chili, stir-fried oyster and shiitake mushrooms with garlic and spicy buckwheat noodles all fell into the "meh" category for me. The clay bowl chicken and the stir-fried oyster mushrooms with chicken (with some extra chicken powder) fell into the "great" category. Also, everything with fermented tofu was "great" to me, but that's because... well... fermented tofu!

Given that Dunlop is a very accomplished cook, I can only speculate in what went wrong here. I think that one reason could be that this book relies quite significantly on subtle flavors of natural ingredients, and a lot of the produce for sale in the US is just not that flavorful. If the produce generally available in the UK is of higher quality and her recipes are calibrated to that, then maybe that could account for the poor results in my kitchen.

Finally, I thought I noticed a slight skew toward things like celery and bell peppers and away from things like bitter melon (my favorite vegetable!), but I realize that things like these are 100% a matter of personal preferences!

On the whole, I give "Every Grain of Rice" three stars. If this was Dunlop's only book (so that the repetitions wouldn't be an issue), then maybe I would have given it four.

Best Chinese cookbook I've ever seen

First, a little background on me--I'm Chinese American. I grew up in Los Angeles in an immigrant household eating a lot of Chinese food, and being exposed to lots of different Chinese food. I've taken many trips to China, and I absolutely love eating and cooking Chinese food. I probably have no less than 10 Chinese cookbooks (well maybe fewer as I've gotten rid of a bunch over the years), and I've continued to hunt for a great one. Well, this is it--this is a fantastic book filled with a variety of recipes, ranging from highly classic dishes to more modern ones (e.g., tofu with avocado? (it's delicious))

What separates this book from many other Chinese cookbooks are what's beyond the recipes. There's what I call a glossary in the back with a comprehensive set of ingredients, sauces (sometimes specific brands to buy) with detailed descriptions. Also, many recipes have suggested variations. I also really enjoy some of the background/stories on some of the recipes (e.g., some were highly extolled by current chefs)

What this isn't is a broad survey of Chinese cuisine, but there are so many recipes that are simple and delicious. I must have marked/tabbed so many recipes for cooking!

About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance, earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. Dr. Besley is also a frequently requested presenter at professional conferences and is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, Dr. Besley is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Maximizing shareholder value

I used this book for a 500-level MBA finance class, and I have to admit I liked it. The first 3/4's of the book drive home the financial manager's objective: Maximizing shareholder value. It does this consistently, and actually got me (A Sales Manager) to understand why profit needs to take a back seat to value.

Like all introductory texts, it skimps a little on complexity. However, I truly have an appreciation now for finance. Many decisions my company makes now make sense. Though I have little need to apply financial concepts in my current job, I can give better `business reason' explanations to my reports when they ask. Which is why I began pursuing an MBA in the first place.

Enough to avoid Finance mistakes

This new edition of the classical title looks very informative and meaningful. Perhaps a little bit more strong in the mathematical treatment will provide the customers with a text more atractive. Anyhow, it is still a good text for beginners.

Inspiring

Finding good information on ways to unleash creativity in a spiritual context is easy. Finding a way to sell creativity to businesses is another thing. I particularly liked the way the book encourages you to customize your own training program. In my business I work with a very diverse group of people and businesses which demands that my program also be diverse. I highly recommend this sourcebook.
