A "MUST HAVE" book for anyone planning to visit Hawaii who plans on flying/touring the Hawaiian Islands. It is the most thorough guide to flying in the Hawaiian Islands I have seen to date. Highly recommended for kamaainas (locals), as well ... they too will find much useful information in this handy, easy to take along book.
Full of information very useful in planning and preparing for your island flights, especially if you are not familiar with the various island airports/airfields or the local terrain & common conditions and the potential hazards to avoid.
This book is very thorough and contains many insightful tips including important safety considerations, best time of day for flights explained, typical and uncommon Hawaiian Island weather conditions and how they can affect your flight, as well as areas and conditions to avoid flying in and why, and much more.
The section highlighting sights to see is conveniently broken down by island. The most impressive sights are quite nicely summarized so you can quickly become knowledgeable as a tour guide for your passengers. The photos showing many of these impressive sights in the book are a nice touch.
Some other nice features in this book, besides the scenic photos, are the runway/airfield diagrams & photos for each of the airports/airfields, as well as some approach/departure routing diagrams. These are quickly found in Appendix A, along with all the important information you will want to know about each airport/airfield, such as elevation, runways & lengths, lighting, communications frequencies, services available, and more. Also a handy reference, is the listing of all Fixed Base Operations in Appendix B, with all the important information listed for each.
This book is full of lots of useful information, photos and diagrams summarized in a compact book that is easy to take along & refer to.

About the Author
Diane Samuels was born in 1960 in Liverpool, England. She studied history at the University of Cambridge, then continued her training as a drama teacher at Goldsmith’s College in London. This led to teaching for five years in secondary schools in the city of London.

Since leaving the teaching profession, Diane Samuels has devoted herself to writing. Among her plays for adult audiences are Watch Out for Mister Stork and Chalk Circle. She has also written a number of children’s theatre plays, including Forever and Ever, One Hundred Million Footsteps, How to Beat a Giant, and The Bonekeeper which was short-listed for the W.H. Smith Award for plays for children. Diane Samuels resides in London with her husband, writer and journalist Simon Garfield, and their two sons.

Kindertransport is a moving drama of the effects of the transport of a Jewish girl from Germany to Britain, requiring her separation from her parents. In the present of the play, the girl Eva is a grown woman, a mother herself, contemplating a more normal separation from her own daughter. Her emotions are complicated by her memories of her past. The play is about Jewish identity, the difficult moral choices facing a Jewish parent in the late 1930s in Germany, what it means to "save" your child, and mothers and daughters. Well worth reading or assigning in a high school or college class in Holocaust literature.

This DVD was captivating. I am a mother of young children, so my eyes weren't dry from start to finish. The heart of those poor children as they watched their parents disappear, some forever, from their line of sight as the train left the station... the faith and utter selfless love of families to give their own into the hands of others so that they might live... and the compassion of a country that accepted the lost... It is all here in this extraordinary story of human endurance.

Remarkably valuable sourcebook

I don't imagine that anybody but students of the Modern Middle East or the Islamic World would find this useful, but for specialists in the field, this is an exceptionally valuable text. There are several points to commend this particular compilation. First, the introductory essay is very good. Second, the range of readings is geographically and topically broad. And third, one can search for essays both by region and by topic. It is an easy source to use for classroom study.

For those who don't have a significant background in the field, this work is likely to be unsatisfying, consisting largely of readings from 19th and early 20th Century Muslim intellectuals. For those with more than a passing interest, this collection certainly gives a sense of major issues and perspectives and would make a good companion to secondary source readings.

"A Bride For Donnigan" was one of the better books by Janette Oke, and started out very interesting. But, there are some hills of good and bad. First off, I found everything too perfect and sugar coated. What are the odds of Donnigan and Kathleen getting along? Much less, falling in love? It might happen, but it would take time. Which leads me into how Oke didn't express how much time goes by, nor the age of Donnigan. We don't know much of anything about Donnigan. Towards the end, the total point of this book was gone. I was hoping for more about their marriage, and the trials and tribulations of it. I did enjoy the characters, nonetheless, and did care about their outcome, but Donnigan seems too good to be true. I'm also glad that a book was finally written about this subject, even if it was just a storybook romance. It still doesn't beat "Roses For Mama," but is good all the same. I recommend.

This is my sixth Janette Oke book to read. This book, hands down,is the best Oke book thus far. Characterization is developed to the point that you can feel the nervousness both of the main characters (Donnigan and Kathleen) experience as they made the decision to sign up and follow through with the idea of the mail order bride. Musical criticism at the highest level

Sir Donald Tovey is widely recognized as the leading music critic of the early 20th century writing in English. These essays are all interesting, often provoking, but it is essential that you can read music as there are many notated examples. I have given this collection only 4 stars because these essays are all old (Tovey died in 1940) and many of his conclusions may be superseded by later research; nevertheless, they're all worthwhile if only as a representation of the best musical scholarship of the time.

Not terrible, but not Island of the Blue Dolphins

Sequels are almost always a let-down. I loved IotBD in grade school, and was thrilled to discover the sequel -- twenty-five years later, while in the library with kids of my own. I took it home and devoured it, but was left dissatisfied.

Not only does Zia's story pale in comparison to Karana's heroic survival, but several moments left me frowning with annoyance.

First of all, the plot inconsistencies drove me mad. Midway through the book, we are given to believe that all the young people at the mission have run away, leaving only Karana and some old Indians behind. (This is crucial to the plot, as she alone is blamed by the cruel captain as a suspected accomplice of the runaways.) But then we learn, out of the blue, that her brother has also remained behind -- but we're never told why. Later, when Karana comes to the mission and is given a bed in the girls' sleeping quarters, I thought this room would now be desolate -- but O'Dell tells us it's still crowded. With whom?

Sadly too, the character of Karana takes a beating in this book. In IotBD, she was a hero, larger than life. But seen through Zia's eyes, she is a mute and pitiable recluse lost in a foreign world, who takes childish delight in melons. This might be realistic, but it's a pathetic turn of events that I would rather not have read.

There is also a tragic irony that runs through the plot, to wit: Karana left her island to seek companionship at long last. But in the sequel, we learn that she ends up withdrawing to an isolated cave where she recreates a tinier, sadder version of her free life on the island, before finally dying of a broken heart. Zia, meanwhile, originally left her home village for the regimented life of the Mission solely in the hope of finding Karana -- but in the end, what she learns from Karana is that she'd be better off back home.

In other words, both characters would have been better off if Zia had never heard of Karana and Karana had died on her island. And I think I would have been better off had I not stumbled across this book.

Whatever Happened to Karana?

Zia is the continuation of the Island of the Blue Dolphins, or what happened to Karana after she left the island.

Zia is a young girl whose mother was the sister of Karana. Zia had learned of Karana before her mother passed away and now Zia wants to rescue Karana from the island. That she tries with her brother, Mundo with a small boat they found washed up. They get caught by whalers and escape.

During this time, the Indians live at the Mission where they have to work hard just to be able to eat and sleep, and also learn the religion of the priests there. There is a lot of unrest and many run away.

Finally when Karana makes it back to the mainland, she cannot get used to the way people live--she has always lived her way with her dog and no one understands that. What was suppose to be a happy reunion between Zia and Karana ends up a sad tale. In the end, Zia finally figures out what life could be like and leaves.

The story is written well and there is truth in it just as there was in the Island of the Blue Dolphins. The tale does drag in places and in others, there is lots of action. But you do learn how the Indians were treated by the Mission people and why they ran. So there is some teaching here.

This book is the sequel to Island of the Blue Dolphins. Zia, the nice of Karana, wants to find her aunt. She tries many possible ways to get to the island that her aunt is supposable on. Many other people came in to help her. Do you think they will ever find Karana?
Zia and, her brother, Mando are the main characters. Mando would be tribally annoying at times. For example, he had to go just about everywhere with Zia. It seemed as if he would never go away. Also, if you did not let him do what he wanted he would cry or make Zia feel like she has to go out of her way to make him happy. Threw out the book you would find Spanish words like; Mira, they would not tell you most of the meanings. That is what I did not like about the book. Mostly the book made it up with action that was taking place. The exciding parts don't last very long in the book. I think they should be longer. Most of the boring parts where long. There were some not very important things in the book but it as still good to read.
I would recommend this book to people who have already read Island of the Blue Dolphins. Also, I recommend this to people who like a great adventure. It is easy to read, but the Spanish words would be hard for people who don't know Spanish.
