Berger (Grandfather Twilight) offers a pretty but vacuous riff on the originally satirical question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" by positing dreamy worlds within worlds of tiny, pin-dwelling angels. Her story opens with the question, "What if there was a city on a pin?"; the accompanying art shows a small-town street, with people and pets--all of them with wings, apparently angels. In the foreground, an elderly woman angel sees a pincushion in a dressmaker's window. The next pages home in on the pincushion, where the head of each pin is the site of a whole city of tiny angels. The plot is thin to the point of brittle: the angels on the pin-city think theirs is the only one in the world, then a child using a telescope spies another city on a pin, contact is made and a celebration begins. Berger's mixed-media paintings create a light and lively atmosphere where angels of all ages and nationalities boogie-woogie ("Shimmy shimmy hip hop, and cha-cha-cha") in mid-air, rejoicing, "Hey wow, look! We're not alone!" The framing story reprises this theme, returning to illustrations of the elderly woman, now joined by a dapper old gent in a top hat--and, suggesting the circularity of the premise, a child can be seen gazing through a telescope. Given that Berger makes no particular use of the angel motif (these could just as well be miniature people), the net effect is that of an extended daydream. Ages 4-8. (Feb.)

PreSchool-Grade 1-A story that ponders the nature of existence in an entire city atop the head of a pin. The winged inhabitants of the pin-top metropolis wonder if there are worlds beyond their own, until a resident spies another community on a neighboring pin. The din from the celebration of their mutual discovery is heard throughout the universe and even more civilizations respond from all over the pincushion and beyond. This revelation helps people to realize that, "Hey wow, look! We're not alone!" Fanciful acrylic, colored-pencil, and pastel illustrations depict a benign multiethnic cast living in pastel-shaded worlds offset by backdrops of deep blues and blacks. While the whimsical yet mysterious pictures will appeal to youngsters, the spare text may leave listeners wishing for more. Fairly deep philosophical concepts are touched upon in this light picture-book romp, creating a certain dissonance between topic and treatment. Children, however, may be oblivious to such considerations and enjoy the book as a light confection as suggested by the visual presentation.

``What if there was a city on a pin?'' Berger (A Lot of Otters, 1997, etc.) asks curiously (if ungrammatically) in this fanciful musing. The city is no bigger than a speck of dust on the head of a pin, but for its inhabitants, it is all there is, and sometimes it makes them lonesome. Then they find another city, travel there, and the boogie-woogie begins: bebop, shimmy, cha cha cha. The cityscapes look like as if they are made of pastel spun sugar, and the figures are recognizably skateboarders, bikers, church ladies, childrenbut they all have wings. The mayor, refulgent in his formal dress, has red wings, a black-and-white dog has pink ones, and the two-stepping cowpokes sport green and gold ones. All this dancing takes place in the streets, above the buildings, and in the lapis-colored, starry sky between the cities. The book's messagethat we are not aloneisn't hammered but sort of tapped gently. The question, ``How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?'' is as least as old as Aquinas and forms the colophon here, leading readers into a dream-scented landscape. Beautiful illustrations - but. . .

I am a big Barbara Helen Berger fan, and as such I was surprised to find myself dissapointed by this book. The illustrations are just as beautiful as her other works, but there was no real story, just a short "we are not alone" message. I was quickly bored, and so was my daughter. However, I did notice my daughter making up her own story as she leafed through the pages. All in all, though, I much prefer this author's other books.

Barbara Berger creates some of the most beautiful imagery in children's picture books, and her spare, evocative prose is the perfect complement to the misty, fanciful illustrations. What a fabulous way to inspire children to think in new and creative ways, while experiencing the joy and exuberance of the imagination. This book is perfect for any child.

My daughter and I loved Grandfather Twilight (she more than me), and so I looked and found this one. It's not religious, except for 'angels,' but about reaching out and connecting to others. The pictures are beautiful, and the first time I read it, I nearly cried. It reminded me of the kind of pure simple hope I had a child, that someday we might meet people from another world, and we would reach out to each other with no fear, only sheer joy at knowing we aren't alone. What a wonderful story to wind down an evening.

About the Author

James P. Gray is Judge of the Superior Court in Orange County in Southern California. He has served as former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and as a criminal defense attorney as a member of the JAG Corps in the Navy. In 1998 he made an unsuccessful run for Congress as a Republican against Bob Dornan. Judge Gray has discussed issues of drug policy on more than one hundred radio and TV shows and numerous drug forums around the country.

An ultra-Orthodox version of the Bible

This translation and commentary is interesting. It contains the Hebrew text, the Aramaic translation of Onkelos, and an English translation and commentary. The problem with the edition is that is reflects an ultra-Orthodox Jewish perspective, and does so by sometimes misquoting the sources that it presents. This has been documented by many scholars.

I enjoy the insight I get from the old Jewish scholars. They have been studying the Torah a long time. Even tho I may disagree with some of their findings on the whole I've learned a lot about the culture and times in which the Torah was written.

The Book is fact, and I'm enjoying it, though it will take a great deal of study. However, the binding is not in good condition; it's in fair condition, and I will have to pay for binding of some type.

About the Author

Dr. Charles B. (“Chuck”) Corbin, PhD, is professor emeritus in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University. He has published more than 200 journal articles and has authored or coauthored more than 90 books, including Concepts of Physical Fitness, Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Fitness for Life, and Fitness for Life: Middle School and Fitness for Life: Elementary School, all winners of Texty Awards. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, health, and wellness promotion and youth physical fitness. He has presented keynote addresses at more than 40 state AHPERD conventions, made major addresses in more than 15 countries, and presented numerous named lectures. He is a past president and emeritus fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, a fellow of the North American Society for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Professionals, an ACSM fellow, and a life member and honor fellow of AAHPERD. His awards include the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and National Jaycees; Distinguished Service Award of the PCFSN; and the Honor Award, Physical Fitness Council Honor Award, Hanson Award, and Alliance Scholar Award from AAHPERD. He received distinguished alumnus awards from the University of New Mexico and the University of Illinois. He served for more than 20 years as a member of the Advisory Board of Fitnessgram and was the first chair of the Science Board of the PCFSN. He was a member of an Institute on Medicine (IOM) committee for youth fitness testing. He was selected to the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) Hall of Fame. In 2009 Dr. Corbin was chosen for the Gulick Award, the highest award of AAHPERD. In 2013 he received the Hetherington Award, the highest honor of the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Guy C. Le Masurier, PhD, is a professor of sport, health, and physical education at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada). He has published numerous articles related to youth physical activity and physical education and coauthored the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Physical Activity Guidelines for Children. Dr. Le Masurier has given more than 30 research and professional presentations at national and regional meetings. He reviews research for numerous professional journals and has contributed to Fitness for Life, Fifth Edition, and the Physical Best Activity Guide. Dr. Le Masurier is a member of AAHPERD, NASPE, ACSM, and Canadian AHPERD. He is also a research consortium fellow of SHAPE America.

Contributing author: Karen E. McConnell, PhD, a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, is a certified health education specialist (CHES) and has taught at the university level for more than 15 years in areas related to health and fitness education, curriculum and assessment, and exercise science. Good, but needs work.

A great book this is, with realistic goals for exercise and nutrition. It doesn’t say that every kid can be a jock, because every kid can’t. It defines fitness as being able to do the most with the least effort, so in a nutshell it means that fitness is being able to use your body to do what you need. But it also says that fitness-demanding jobs are in decline, so fitness is now more of a concern for average cubicle-slaves.
There’s good advice here for starting out, especially if you’re sedentary, and it shows you how to use small steps to getting in shape. It warns against fad diets and fad machines, because they don’t work. The ab-master, ab-roller- ab-vibrator, Nordic Track, Soloflex; they were advertised with beautiful, muscular models, and bought by desperate nebbishes who wanted a quick fix to a long-term problem. I should know, I was one of them, and my Nordic Track didn’t help. I should’ve just gotten rid of the TV and walked to school.
The problem with this book is the target audience. It focuses mostly on kids, but what about the adults? People who have to drive an hour in each direction and sit at a desk all day are in a sedentary trap. What about construction workers work their knees and shoulders hard all day? What kind of fitness advise is there for them? Another problem is the photos; they’re all of beautiful young men and women. No acne, flabby bellies, fat thighs, fat butts, etc. I would be wary of showing this book to teens, because seeing all this perfection can make them hate their bodies. Not every teen has beautiful hair and a great tan. It also doesn’t take into account that some schools have the kids in there until 5pm, and they’ve cut out gym class. It also doesn’t factor that when a school has P.E. it usually favors the jocks and consists of “here’s a ball go play.” The non-athletic kids are left out, picked last.

The Sun Also Rises first appeared in 1926, and yet it's as fresh and clean and fine as it ever was, maybe finer. Hemingway's famously plain declarative sentences linger in the mind like poetry: "Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slipover jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy's. She started all that." His cast of thirtysomething dissolute expatriates--Brett and her drunken fiancé, Mike Campbell, the unhappy Princeton Jewish boxer Robert Cohn, the sardonic novelist Bill Gorton--are as familiar as the "cool crowd" we all once knew. No wonder this quintessential lost-generation novel has inspired several generations of imitators, in style as well as lifestyle.

Jake Barnes, Hemingway's narrator with a mysterious war wound that has left him sexually incapable, is the heart and soul of the book. Brett, the beautiful, doomed English woman he adores, provides the glamour of natural chic and sexual unattainability. Alcohol and post-World War I anomie fuel the plot: weary of drinking and dancing in Paris cafés, the expatriate gang decamps for the Spanish town of Pamplona for the "wonderful nightmare" of a week-long fiesta. Hemingway's First Masterpiece!

This, friends, was the single book that so fatefully launched Ernest Hemingway's amazing and long-lived literary career. As such it is as close to being a legendary book as they come, yet some seventy five years after its initial publication, it still offers a story that is also surprisingly fresh, personal, and memorable. For all of his obvious excesses, Hemingway was an artist compelled to delve deliberately into painful truths, and he attempted to do so with a style of writing that cut away all of the frills and artifice, so that at it s heart this novel is meant as a exploration into what it means to be adult and alive. Thus we are introduced to Jake Barnes, a veteran of World War One, now forced by his wounds to live as a man without the ability to act like one, forced by impotence to forgo all of life's usual intimacies, and all of its associated life connections for which he so yearns. At the same time, Jake attempts to live a life of meaning and purpose, one crammed full with activity, work, and friendships. Yet it is within this network of friendships and connections that he must confront his painful circumstances.

Enter his true love, the feckless Lady Ashley, and indeed the plot thickens, for we soon see how Jake's physical affliction has painfully affected several others. Ashley loves him, but needs a virile man who can give her the physical love she needs. While Ashley is a woman of uncommon beauty, she is also virtuous enough in her won way to want the one man she truly loves to be her lover. Like all of us, she wants most that which she can never have, and so she returns to the source of her own dilemma time after time to Jake, her emotional match, the one man who cannot give her the mature emotional love she craves. So they are condemned to circle around each other, even while some of their friends and other members of the in-crowd interfere, compete, and seek Ashley's affections around the edges of the continuing affair.
What we are left with is a modern tragedy, one in which the characters must somehow resolve the irresolvable.

Yet for all this emotional turmoil and existential `sturm-und-drang' of the so-called "lost generation", people drowning in the moral anomie and circumstantial wasteland created in the gutters of their own endless wants and needs, it is most often Hemingway's imaginative and spare use of the language itself that wins the reader over. Unlike his predecessors, he sought a lean narrative style that cut away at all the flowery description and endless adjectives. In the process of parsing away the excesses, Hemingway created a clear, simple and quite declarative prose style that was truly both modern and revolutionary. What one encounters as a result is a story seemingly stripped to its barest essentials, superficially more like the newspaper man's pantheon of who, what, where, when, and why, and yet somehow transformed into a much more accurate and imaginative effort, one leaving the reader with a much more artful account of what is going on. One reads Hemingway quickly, at least at first, when one learns to slow down and drink in every word and every detail as it is related. For me and for millions of others, the true genius of Hemingway is to be found in his artful use of language. This book was Hemingway's first truly successful foray into the world of letters, and the result changed the face of modern fiction. Enjoy!

Hemingway rules! Rargh!

The Sun Also Rises is one of the few works of literature that shook me to the core, along with Remarque's Three Comrades, Gorky's autobiography, and Chekhov's The Lady With The Dog. I read a page and I was hooked. Bam, just like that. I read the thing in a day. In several hours, actually. And then I went and devoured the rest of the man's literary oeuvre. It's just that great. All the greater because when you really look at it, there's no dramatic action going on here - just some people talking, then going to Spain to see the bullfights. But don't let that fool you - boring this book ain't.
Jake Barnes, like most of the characters, is a veteran of World War I. A very unfortunate wound left physical love a complete impossibility for him, and thus he is left gnashing his teeth watching the woman he loves run around with all sorts of men. The Jewish Robert Cohn, who learned boxing in college in order to conquer his feelings of inferiority, happens to become smitten with her as well. Somehow, they and some of their friends and acquaintances end up going to Spain to experience the Fiesta, and while their experience starts the same giddy, frenzied, hedonistic way as for most people, it ends quite differently, when the book's darker undercurrents come to light. Insert scenes of cafe life, fishing, reminiscences, conversations with friends, watching the bullfights, some absolutely brutal humor, and lots and lots of liquor, and you've got yourself Hemingway's first masterpiece. Every element of every great Hemingway book can be seen here - plenty of vivid descriptions; moments of strange, elegiac melancholy; the human spirit fighting against the world; loneliness, isolation, and endurance. They're all here.
For some reason, this book seems to draw accusations of anti-Semitism. And all I've to say on that topic is: What? Anti-Semitism? Here? Please, what is this you speak of? Sure, Cohn's a Jew. And sure, the characters aren't too fond of him. And yet, Hemingway presents him in a very, very sympathetic light. Sure, we're rooting for Jake Barnes because he's smarmy and witty and cool, but when we see Cohn break down in tears in his hotel room because ..., he was naive enough to _believe_ Brett loved him, how can you possibly say Hemingway had any anti-Semitic sentiments on his mind? No, no, no, and a thousand times no. This is not a book about Jews, or Americans, or Britishers. This is a book about _people_, about young people searching for substance in a world that has none, trying to build up some sort of semblance of a normal life after having been through war. This is a book about people who feel life has passed them all by, and who have nothing to really look forward to. This book is filled with the genuine bitter loneliness of people who see nothing ahead of them. The sense of hopeless longing for something better permeates every page.
The Sun Also Rises is the sound of people trying to find a purpose for themselves in an increasingly shallow world. And lest that not convince you to read it, it happens to rock .... Rarely have I read more bitingly acerbic insults and comebacks, wry and cynical remarks, and deadly accurate observations. Actually, rarely have I ever felt so drawn in to the world of a book as much as here. I identified with Jake Barnes and Bill Gorton and that Englishman they met while fishing and with the boozing Mike and with Cohn. I understood their copious drinking and verbal barb-flinging because I was struck by the moments of absolutely believable fragile vulnerability that lay underneath the surface. The subtle gestures, the shifts in tone, the tough, terse prose all added to the various effects when necessary. When I was done, the book left an indelible stamp on my mind. And what higher recommendation could anyone possibly give a book than that?

Interesting and insightful - but not necessarily enjoyable to read

I have mixed feelings about this novel. On one level I appreciate it for the fine literary work that it is. In particular, I admire Hemmingway's use of symbolism throughout the novel. But at the same time, this isn't a novel I enjoyed reading. The novel features a cast of characters that are not especially likable and the first third of the novel moves a little too slowly (Jake and his friends lead aimless lives -and the first part of the novel is pretty aimless).

Jake and his fellow expatriates spend the entire novel getting drunk, being drunk, or recovering from having been drunk (or `tight' as they like to say). They pass their days eating, drinking and being as insensitive as possible to one another. It would be easy to dismiss these characters as unpleasant, and therefore uninteresting, but in the context of the years following WWI, I found myself feeling some sympathy for them.

Simply put, they're damaged goods. Jake, Mike, and Bill all fought in WWI(Jake becoming less of a man as a result) and were forever affected by it. They are now lost, drowning their empty aimless lives in alcohol.

Arguably, the most interesting character in the novel is Lady Ashley (Brett) who is a toxic influence on nearly every man she encounters. Jake, Mike, and Cohn are all in love with her to varying degrees and pay an emotional price as a result. Brett's self centered behaviour complicates the lives of the men who are enamored by her. Jake, who is impotent because of the war, demonstrates his love for Brett by helping her pursue men and then picking up the pieces when the affair ends badly.

There is no happiness for the lost generation in The Sun Also Rises and considerable irony in the novel's final sentence. I found this to be an interesting and insightful novel but I can't say I really `enjoyed' reading it. As a literary work this novel warrants 4 stars. As entertainment: 2 stars. Overall: 3 stars.
