Alexander Dugin (b. 1962) is one of the best-known writers and political commentators in post-Soviet Russia, having been active in politics there since the 1980s. In addition to the many books he has authored on political, philosophical, and spiritual topics, he is the leader of the International Eurasia Movement, which he founded. For more than a decade, he has been an advisor to Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin on geopolitical matters. Creating new political space

In this work Alexander Dugin analyzes the development of earlier Eurasianism to its current manifestations on the political scene. According to Dugin, “Eurasianism is a type of structuralism with the accent placed on multiplicity and synchronicity of structures” (Dugin loc. Cited 68). This means there are a plurality of human societies, each with its own “mode of growing” that must be respected.

Dugin sees Russia’s role as defending the possibility of each civilization’s unique flourishing. This means Russia creates the political space as opposed to the Atlanticist desire to impose globalization. In terms of method Dugin largely applies Heidegger’s philosophy, though not universally. He draws upon suggestions made by both “Left” (dialectical) and “Right” (traditionalist) thinkers as they both oppose neo-liberalist/globalism (loc. 434).

How would a Neo-Eurasianist Policy Look?

Dugin isn’t blind to the advances that globalism has made. Whether we like it or not, it happened and we can’t go back to 19th century nation-states. Please note this: We are not nationalists in the strict sense of the word. Therefore, he suggests “several global zones (poles). The Eurasian Idea is an alternative or multipolar version of globalization” (loc. 641). Similar to his claims in The Last War of the World-Island, we no longer see a battle between East/West or North/South, but of Center/Periphery with the Atlanticist Civilization (New York/London/Brussels) at the center.

And within these zones there are poles and “Great Spaces,” or democratic empires that are organically constituted. Some examples

(I) Iran-Syria-Armenia
(2) Germano-Nordic/Frankish
(3) Anglo-American
(4) Mediterranean Europe
(5) Eurasian Europe

Dugin argues for regions to have autonomy, not sovereignty and boundaries, not borders. Boundaries arise from an organic wholeness. Borders are used to divide, boundaries to bind. For countries with large amounts of land, major cities should be depopulated and there should be a network of townships. Townships are ecological settlements separated from the cities by clean forests (page 85).

Dugin ends his philosophical analysis with remarkable insights into social atomism. Lockean/empiricism/libertarianism is false because it rests upon a false physics, a false ontology. Atomism is false because we now about sub-atomic structures. Empirical social philosophies are false because within the individual are underlying currents that resist reductionism.

This book isn't perfect, though. There was a coherent argument throughout, but some chapters seemed like blog articles tacked on.

In this book Alexander Dugin and his editor John Morgan provide a very lucid outline of both the historical roots and more recent currents that have led to neo-Eurasianism (Eurasianism and its main proponents, National Bolshevism etc). It also announces to the wider world the recent emergence of the International Eurasian Movement as an ideological and political force. This movement with its call for a multipolar world (vs a unipolar world dominated by America and liberal ideology) can resonate with readers from all continents. Its geopolitical ramifications concern the whole world and not just the vast Eurasian homeland.
Eurasian Mission is a rarity – a book that authentically challenges the political status quo with stimulating and original ideas. This alone demands that it should be widely read. One does not even have to accept its fundamental premises or its onslaught on the prevailing liberal oligarchy to benefit from reading it. It is crucial that a healthy intellectual arena of discourse be not only maintained but continually stimulated by the dissemination of alternative notions, with views that may go deeply against the prevailing norms. Our minds need to be honed not lulled to sleep by a narrow liberal world-view which oligarchic situation Chomsky has pointed out encourages seemingly vigorous debate but only within the confines of a conventional and acceptable sphere. Dugin’s book is way outside of prevailing norms and the dull and narrow confines of conventional sham debate and as such is exactly the sort of book questing minds should be reading. Eurasian Mission is as significant in its own way as Dugin’s The Fourth Political Theory another fascinating and ground-breaking book that has been translated into English and has also been published by Arktos.

Ignore the negative reviews and open your mind

A thoroughly insightful take on Western dogma and ideology, Dugin presents facts and allows the reader to make their own mind up, I am a Professor of European History an lecture in London and Paris, I have made this book required reading among my students so that they may see both sides of the coin more clearly.

The reviews here from the cia stooges and Washington toadies is only to be expected and perhaps even welcomed, if Dugin's work was not seen as threatening to the status quo then it would not be cause for concern expressed in the rabid negativity its illicits herein.

If you, like millions of ordinary Europeans, feel our elected leaders are merely kow towing to America's corporate and financial interests above those of their people then you will appreciate this book like no other, buy it and learn.

Beautiful and unique textured knitting

If you like textured knitting, like to be somewhat experimental in your knitting, and like to knit scarves, shawls, and hats, this book is for you. Yes it’s expensive, but with this book and my stash, I’ve got Christmas covered. I anticipate many happy hours of experimentation, discovering how different sequences pair with various yarn textures, colors, and weights, and ending up with beautiful, unique hand knits.

Don’t let the technical look of the book put you off. Just look at the methods on p. 5, look at the pictures to pick a texture, and dive in. You will quickly understand the basic concept. The book is copiously illustrated with swatches that will be helpful and time-saving guides to experimentation. While the basic idea is simple, I am very happy to own the book and have it for reference.

The book has illustrated patterns with that use a variety of yarns and also colorwork. It contains scarf, shawl, and hat patterns (see thumbnail photos of patterns at the end of the book.) It also gives very helpful basic information on working with color and variegated yarns. It covers how to use the method beyond rectangles, but I haven’t gotten there yet.

One note on buying the book. I had it on order at Amazon for months, and figured it wasn’t available yet. Then I discovered the book was available, but at about twice the price of my Amazon order. Fortunately, I happened to spot the book in a high-end knitting shop I visited while traveling. After looking at it, I quickly decided it was worth the price to me, but it costs enough that I was hesitant to purchase sight unseen. My understanding is that the book is being sold through LYS and bookstores, rather than directly by Amazon. I understand the sentiment and applaud it, but it does make life difficult for those who don't live in a large city and want to see a book in person before spending $60.

Simple idea, complex results.

Sequence knitting is a simple idea that gives rise to complex textures. If you understand the basic idea (knit the same sequence over and over) you can get started knitting one of the projects right away and might even wonder how someone could fill a whole book on the subject. Simple as the idea is, it turns out that a thorough exploration of all the possibilities would take a ridiculous amount of systematic swatching, so much so that "I'm so glad someone else worked this out" was my dominant thought as I paged through it for the first time.

The most compelling thing about sequence knitting for me as a knitter is that it provides something between "boring knitting that I can do anywhere" and "knitting that must not be interrupted mid-row or else all is lost". It's engrossing enough that I don't want to poke my eyes out while knitting alone for long stretches, but simple and rhythmic enough that I can follow the thread of a conversation and/or complex plot line without any trouble. I see myself using it more and more with time as the idea settles into my brain and becomes one of the options I think about automatically when planning a new project.

Magnificent HUGE book! Well worth the money.

While Lincoln lays dying, Booth's accomplices clumsily attempt to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and Booth talks his way past a guard meant to bar him from crossing a bridge into Maryland. In focusing on Booth, the author reveals the depth of divisions in the nation just after the war, the disorder within the government and the challenges ahead. Divided into 14 chapters and an epilogue, the sentences are shorter and chapters are condensed from the original but the rich details and suspense are ever present. Lacking are a bibliography and a notes section. Excellent black-and-white illustrations complement the text. Devoted to the South, John Wilkes Booth had planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him hostage, but when that plan did not materialize, he hatched his assassination plot. Co-conspirators in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia helped him escape and evade capture for 12 days before being surrounded in a barn and killed. Readers will be engrossed by the almost hour-by-hour search and by the many people who encountered the killer as he tried to escape. It is a tale of intrigue and an engrossing mystery. Though Booth remains his principal focus, the author cuts cinematically among the actions of the other conspirators. This device succeeds in building suspense but sometimes proves awkward and confusing, especially where chronology is concerned. Worse, there is no appended matter—no index, no notes on sources, no bibliography, no time line. As a result, statements like “It was the most beautiful night in the history of the capital,” or “Jones’ eyes lit up,” or “It was one of the happiest days of his life” are unsourced. The subject matter remains intrinsically fascinating, however, and Swanson’s colorful account will hold readers’ interest throughout. The intensity of the book was something I enjoyed. The book took us through the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and the capture of John Booth. From the shot to the capture, this book was so precise on the facts of the event. For example, on the same night of Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s accomplices had plans to attack other state officials.
There are a few things I did not enjoy about this book. It was a little slow in the middle as Booth and his accomplice were siting in the woods. The story jumped around a little while they were transitioning characters, which could get a little confusing. Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable book.
If you like history, you would love this book. I am not big on history, but it kept me interested with all the action. Someone who enjoys thrillers or suspense, would also think it is great. People from 10 to 80 could find something interesting in the pages. I recommend it.

"Chasing Lincoln's Killer" was definitely a good book to read. Although there was a lot of people and it was confusing at first, I started to understand the the connection between them as the story moved on. This book gave me a lot of information on the assassination of President Lincoln and the manhunt of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold. I never knew that there was such a complex plan for it, and that other politicians were also attacked. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in this topic because it gives you so much information on it.

This book was delivered promptly on the standard shipping (just a few days) and the book was described as (good) well it was delivered looking brand new and it was a hardcover for just $3.95! I will continue to order from this company, especially when my kids have a book then need asap for a school assignment. They are very fair in describing the condition of the book, no disappointment here ... beats running to Barnes and Noble and having me put on a waiting list because the whole 9th grade glass with same book assignment cleared the shelves.

Why this book is so good

This book is justly famous.

I have a shelf full of cookbooks (literally) and like this one best for three reasons. First, the authors really did write their recipes with ordinary US supermarkets in mind. It is fairly easy to get the ingredients for any of the dishes. The authors also describe things very clearly so you can make something new and not be afraid.

But the very best thing of all is that the authors tell you _why_. Why a particular method works, why it's necessary, why some substitution won't work, and so on. They do this far better than any other book I've seen. This one is worth the cost.

It will take more than this, but.....

Anyone who reads learns quickly not to judge a book by its cover. And in this case it is doubly important because neither the look nor the title serve as any indication of what is inside this classic tome. It could be argued that it is impossible to "master the art..." by reading a book, and I would agree. What is important, however, is realizing the breadth of understanding that can be gained by a careful reading of this work. It is an important work not only because of its timeliness when it was in its infancy and first published, but because it shares a timeless look into the history of the culinary arts as seen through eyes shaded by French gastronomy.

I watched the movie "Julie & Julia", the theme from which was derived from the over five hundred recipes in this two volume set, and I also remember some of the episodes from Julia Childs early television career. I truly enjoyed the movie, but the early Julia Child television stuff was not something that modern television producers would consider a first class effort. I think, perhaps, that we become somewhat jaded by modern television and the almost universal accessibility of convenience based communication.

Thankfully, bound printed journals such as this do not suffer the decay that is so prevalent in today's digital world. You can be proud of the wonderful books that you own. You can read and re-read them and enjoy them for many years, then pass them down to others who are free to enjoy them too. "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" belongs to that very select group that I own...and will never part with. This set joins many others, but is one of a few that I really enjoy re-reading. Every time I take them from their place on the shelf and page through them, I learn something new. Gaining knowledge is in itself a good thing.

No, you will not become a master French chef by reading these volumes. You will, however, gain a terrific insight into French gastronomy and pick up some great tips. All of which will serve you well as you strive to prepare that special dish or try to understand the reasoning behind "mother sauces" and how it affects the homemade mac & cheese dish that your child relishes.

There are many reasons to read and own "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", but staying current with modern French cuisine is not one of them. If however, you love 'continental' cuisine or maybe just have an insatiable desire to better understand the history of gastronomy that pre-dates modern canned and packaged goodness, then this two volume set will serve you well. And, who knows, you too may be enticed to travel the road of Julie and prepare all five hundred plus recipes firmly embedded in "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and in the history of food world wide.

A WONDERFUL book!

If anyone on earth ever felt hesitant and unequipped to tackle the recipes in this masterpiece by Julia Child and her colleagues, they don't need to give it another thought. I was nervous and excited about the pending arrival of this book when I ordered it, and eagerly went through it when it finally arrived.....surprised and overjoyed at what I read.

While the recipes require your full attention, they are not as daunting as they may sound. In fact, I immediately saw a small collection of scattered recipes that I, a working mother, could easily and gleefully make on a day off or quiet weekend. The recipes are accompanied by a list of equipment you will need to make the recipe and very simple, thorough step-by-step instructions.

It does take a commitment of time to make many of the recipes, but you probably wouldn't have been looking for this book if you weren't willing to make the time to cook special choices from the book. You would have looked instead at the books featuring ten minute meals featuring minute rice and canned tuna.

I have to admit....I wouldn't utilize these recipes several times a week, or even a few times a week.But the book is a treasure and a gem for anyone looking for something special to make for a special day, a special gathering, or a special person.

The book also explains cooking terms, cooking equipment, and some things as simple as how to make a great omelet or poached egg. It would make a great gift for those rare and admirable souls that actually look forward to real cooking.

I recommend stepping out with confidence and joy and getting this book......because it is a great exercise in challenging yourself and exploring the wonderful and new! You won't fail. It's designed to help you succeed.

Not only will you triumph....but somewhere, silently, Julia will be cheering you on.

David has served as Minister of Music, Minister of Worship, Pastor, and Itinerate traveling Prophet to churches and institutions across the nation and around the world. He is the founder and Apostolic visionary over Kingdom Dimensions Apostolic Ministries and The Davidic Company: a prophetic worship and arts ministry dedicated to restoring True Worship throughout the Body of Christ. He currently resides in Southfield, Michigan.

Much Needed Word

Decently written book on the subject. More of this type of teaching needs to be available to the body. Excellent resource for Biblical / Scriptural basis for prophetic worship ministers. For those who do not understand their calling to minister to the Lord in worship so that the body is blessed, this will be of help and a service.

Cast irons are described in six articles. The introductory article on Classification and Basic Metallurgy of Cast Irons was completely rewritten for the 10th Edition. The article on Compacted Graphite Iron is new to the Handbook. Both of these contributions were authored by D.M. Stefanescu (The University of Alabama), who served as Chairman of Volume 15, Casting, of the 9th Edition. The remaining four articles contain new information on materials (for example, austempered ductile iron) and testing (for example, dynamic tear testing).
Carbon and Low-Alloy Steels. Key additions to this section include articles that explain the relationships among processing (both melt and rolling processes), microstructures, and properties of steels. Of particular note is the article by G. Krauss (Colorado School of Mines) on pages 126 to 139 and the various articles on high-strength low-alloy steels. Other highlights include an extensive tabular compilation that cross-references SAE-AISI steels to their international counterparts (see the article Classification and Designation of Steels ) and an article on Bearing Steels that compares both case-hardened and through-hardened bearing materials.
Hardenability of Carbon and Low-Alloy Steels. Following articles that introduce H-steels and describe hardenability concepts, including test procedures to determine the hardening response of steels, a comprehensive collection of hardenability curves is presented. Both English and metric hardenability curves are provided for some 86 steels.
Fabrication Characteristics. Sheet formability, forgeability, machinability, and weldability are described next. The article on bulk formability, which emphasizes recent studies on HSLA forging steels, is new to the Handbook series. The material on weldability was completely rewritten and occupies nearly four times the space allotted in the 9th Edition.
Service Characteristics. The influence of various in-service environments on the properties of steels is one of the most widely studied subjects in metallurgy. Among the topics described in this section are elevated-temperature creep properties, low-temperature fracture toughness, fatigue properties, and impact toughness. A new article also describes the deleterious effect of neutron irradiation on alloy and stainless steels. Of critical importance to this section, however, is the definitive treatise on Embrittlement of Steels written by G.F. Vander Voort (Carpenter Technology Corporation). Featuring more than 75 graphs and 372 references, this 48-page article explores the causes and effects of both thermal and environmental degradation on a wide variety of steels. Compared with the 9th Edition on the same subject, this represents a nearly tenfold increase in coverage.
Specialty Steels and Heat-Resistant Alloys. Eleven articles on wrought, cast, and powder metallurgy materials for specialty and/or high-performance applications make up this section. Alloy development and selection criteria as related to corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant steels and superalloys are well documented. More than 100 pages are devoted to stainless steels, while three new articles have been written on superalloys including one on newly developed directionally solidified and single-crystal nickel-base alloys used for aerospace engine applications.
Special Engineering Topics. The final section examines two subjects that are becoming increasingly important to the engineering community: (1) the availability and supply of strategic materials, such as chromium and cobalt, used in stainless steel and superalloy production, and (2) the current efforts to recycle highly alloyed materials. Both of these subjects are new to the Handbook series. A second article on recycling of nonferrous alloys will be published in Volume 2 of the 10th Edition. --ASM International

A Captivating Summer (Job) Read

Time and time again, I realize that I should have consulted the ASM Handbook earlier and more often during research. While it does not include the most recent research in the field (last update was in the 90's) it is a great primer for background knowledge in various metals phenomena. Each volume is a massive tome, but they offer a prolific "specific usefulness" factor (both by weight and by volume), so do not be intimidated.

And while some may claim that you're not reading them for the plot, the ASM guides offer many plots, tables, and micrographs for your consulting pleasure.
