About the Author
Karen Wilken Braun is an associate professor for the Weatherhead School of Management
at Case Western Reserve University. Professor Braun was on the faculty of the
J.M. Tull School of Accounting at the University of Georgia before her appointment at
Case Western. She has received several student-nominated Outstanding Teacher of the
Year awards at both business schools.

Professor Braun has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1985 and holds membership
in the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Institute of Management
Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She also holds
the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation, and is a member of the
AAA’s Management Accounting Section as well as the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum
Section. Her research and teaching interests revolve around lean operations,
sustainability, corporate responsibility, and accounting education. Dr. Braun’s work has
been published in Contemporary Accounting Research, Issues in Accounting Education,
and Journal of Accounting Education.

Dr. Braun received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, where she was an
AICPA Doctoral Fellow, a Deloitte & Touche Doctoral Fellow, and an AAA Doctoral
Consortium Fellow. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, from Luther College,
where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Braun gained public accounting experience
while working at Arthur Andersen & Co. and accumulated additional business
and management accounting experience as a corporate controller.


Wendy M. Tietz is an associate professor for the Department of Accounting in the
College of Business Administration at Kent State University, where she has taught since
2000. Prior to Kent State University, she was on the faculty at the University of Akron.
She teaches in a variety of formats, including large sections, small sections, and webbased
sections. She has received numerous college and university teaching awards while
at Kent State University. Most recently she was named the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor
of the Year for the College of Business Administration at Kent State University.
Dr. Tietz is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant,
and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. She is a member of the American Accounting
Association (AAA), the Institute of Management Accountants and the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She has published in Issues in Accounting
Education, Accounting Education: An International Journal, and Journal of Accounting
& Public Policy. She regularly presents at AAA regional and national meetings. She
also leads a short-term Study Abroad trip for accounting majors to Paris and London
each year.

Dr. Tietz received her Ph.D. from Kent State University. She received both her
M.B.A. and B.S.A. from the University of Akron. She worked in industry for several
years, both as a controller for a financial institution and as the operations manager and
controller for a recycled plastics manufacturer.

Dr. Tietz and her husband, Russ, have two grown sons. In her spare time, she enjoys
bike riding, walking, and reading. She is also very interested in using technology
in education.

About the Author
Mike Kuniavsky is a user experience designer, researcher, and author. A twenty-year veteran of digital product development, Mike designs products, business processes, and services at the leading edge of technological change. He is a principal in PARC's Innovation Services Group.

Prior to joining PARC, he co-founded several successful user experience centered companies, including ThingM, which designs and manufactures ubiquitous computing and Internet of Things products, and Adaptive Path, a well-known design consultancy. He specializes in multi-device interactions, cloud-based service design, and design of hardware products connected to cloud-based services. His background includes design for social analytics, consumer electronics, appliances, image retrieval, RGB LEDs, and financial services.

He has worked with some of the world's top technology companies, such as Samsung, Sony, Nokia, Whirlpool, and Qualcomm, to design new products, guide product strategy, and create user-centered design and development cultures.

He is also the author of "Observing the User Experience: A Practitioner's Guide to User Research" and he lives in San Francisco with his family.

First In Ubicomp Mobile Devices & Interaction Design--Excellent

This beautiful and simultaneously unbelievably useful book represents several firsts, incorporating the Interaction Design and User Experience Design of Mobile Devices and Household Appliances; at the same time it provides ideas and design guidelines for the design of Ubiquitous Computing solutions, suggesting what we can usefully do with the emerging "Internet of Things". The author is a leading light in Interaction Design having been a co-founder of Adaptive Path and the first firm offering Physical Computing Solutions with a Design and HCI flavor, ThingM. He is the originator of the concept of "Sketching In Hardware", an idea that owes some intellectual roots to Bill Buxton of Microsoft but which points the way to those Artists and Engineers who combine Physical Computing, Electronics and Interaction Design. He has a track record of developing real Physical and Computational solutions which illustrate an Engineering as well as an Artistic Problem-Solving Ethic. His physical creations include the interactive intelligent and beautiful WineM wine rack and a smart multicolor LED for Arduino (and other microcontroller) experiments.

Many scholarly, and a few idea-centric books (notably Adam Greenfield's "Everyware") and articles have been written about Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing, but no other book to date has given the design parameters, heuristics and suggestions about how these communicating engineering devices can be incorporated into a desirable user experience. Simultaneously, Mr. Kuniavsky has written one of the first books documenting the optimal methods of designing Interactive Intelligent Objects including mobile computing devices and appliances (such as centralpark refrigerator). He develops useful metaphor's and monikers for designed Interactive Objects (e.g. Information Shadows and Service Avatar). This is a beautiful, interesting and necessary book.

Eye-Opener on User Experience

This book really gave me food for thought. I've always thought about a user's interaction with a device in terms of its interface (buttons, GUI, etc.). This book opened my eyes to the fact that it's not just the interface, but the user's entire experience with the device that matters. Anyone who has a hand in designing or making something that must be interacted with should learn about this.

There are chapters on things like "Applianceness", "Scales of Experience", and "Information Shadows". Each one discusses an important design consideration, and how it relates to user experience. Some of the chapters are more like case studies: the development of a specific product (like the iPod) is discussed, with a focus on how its overall user experience was designed. I found them interesting and enlightening. It's fascinating to read about some of the products. As the author points out, some devices are easy to use but not useful. Other devices, like the iPod coupled with iTunes, provide a good overall experience and do well. Still others, while they may have a solid design and reasoning behind them, do not do well in the marketplace.

The author references many sources in the book, so if you want to do any additional reading on the subject you shouldn't have any difficulty in assembling a reading list. The author chooses to cite his sources inline using (author and year), as opposed to a number like [42]. Unfortunately, placing a reference citation inline is disruptive, and because he uses the longer citation format it got annoying at times.

I think that if you need (or want) to learn about user interface/experience design principles, this book will be an informative read.

Good textbook on concepts and idea in UX design

I am an interactive designer/web developer by trade and when I ordered this book, I expected it to contain discussions of different interactive technology platforms and implementation methods for creating "smart things", machines or objects with embedded processors that can respond to sensory input and do something cool.

Having "computing" in the title, I expected to be able to learn how to make and program simple gadgets or at least encounter some theory on human-machine interaction, like the excellent The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems by Jef Raskin. My expectations were perhaps misplaced. This is not an instruction manual or an engineering book. Instead, it contains a lot of foundation-type material like the kind of book you might find in a Design 101 class. It will teach you the vocabulary and concepts of the field, not the hows. It is a high level overview of design concept like "avatar ecologies" and "information shadows", and explores a wide range of products throughout the last few decades, including the iPod, Atari game machines, Nabaztag, QR codes, cellphones, and other electronic gadgets.

Recommended for students of the interactive design field so they can get a lay of the land. If you're looking to create specific products using various technologies, you will have to look at instructional books on programming iPhone, Android, HTML/PHP, or Flash instead.

It evaluates the responses of seven large organizations in a "best methods" type of analysis to distill specific actions that assist recovery following an earthquake. The monograph discusses political and regulatory issues and preventive evaluation approaches. The authors are commended for such a useful work.

The best book for Wilderness AND Urban Survival

Just got the new book in the 'Build the Perfect Bug Out' series by Creek Stewart. As soon as I saw this on Amazon's pre-order, I knew it was a must have. Even though I have stuff by Jeager, Nesmuk, Kochanski, and Canterbury as well as numerous tomes on country and pioneer living, this is one I had to have. Let's be honest; much in survival and preparation books is redundant, as you can talk about how to boil water only so many different ways, But Creek has proven time and time again that a flexible mind is the most important survival skill.

In his new book Build the Perfect Bug Out Survival Skills, he blends urban and wilderness skills is such a clever and new way, it makes the book immediately valuable for the urban reader. For instance, he has a great idea for using a 55 gal drum as a fire reflector. Often times, you can find a drum torn up or in bad shape. Take that one and split down the side and stretched out a bit so it forms a wide letter 'C'. Then lay it on its side and build the fire right on the edge. Also, his idea for a rat snare using a twitch up and 4 inch pvc is absolutely the most shrewd trapping scheme I've seen in months. He also shows how to make an urban alarm on a door using a twitch up as well...brilliant!

Look, you need this book. Even if you're not in the woods, even if you're not a 'prepper', even if you just sit around all day waiting for the government to protect your family and take care of your family because you won't do the job God gave YOU....you need this book. And why? Because, if for no other reason, you need to see really sagacious ideas contrived to solve problems you didn't even know you had and might actually one day have to implement.

Well, his next book won't be in the 'Bug Out' series. It will be a stand alone volume entitled "The Noncon Pack". A term that Creek coined which means 'non-consumables'. This volume will deal with building a bag for the truely screwed, because you're not going to be back...ever. So, everything in that bag must allow you to make what you need not be what you need. That one may not even get to be printed but I really do think Creek's got the juice to make that deal even if he has to go vanity press and put it on Amazon himself.

Outstanding Addition to your Survival Library

This is an outstanding survival book by a survivalist with an unconventional take on survival. Stewart has carved a niche for himself with an unusual combination of rural and urban survival skills not presented by the average survival book.

And, unlike a other survival books that try to throw in everything but the kitchen sink and attempt to be all things to all people, Stewart has only discussed what he feels is the most important elements to surviving in both the bush, and in an urban survival situation.

While the book touches on a number of aspects of survival, some of them unconventional, such as using a couple of cinder blocks in an urban environment as a backstop to a fire to radiate heat, the main emphasis of this book is as a Bug Out scenario.

So, for example if you want a survival book to discuss navigation and the use of a compass, you will not find it here.

Nor, for example does he touch upon the most important part of a bug out survival scenario, Clothing. Which I found rather interesting.

As any person interested in survival knows, the most important part of survival and the first line of defense in a survival situation, is the clothing on your back and your footwear.

But don't let these omissions deter you from buying the book, as his unconventional style and focus more than makes up for this.

So in conclusion, if you enjoy reading survival books like I do and want an excellent primer on a combination of urban and rural survival, this book is a must have.

Just received this book today...have read about a fourth of it so far. What a great book. Contains
a ton of actionable survival info. I have been studying / practicing survival skills for a while and was
pleased to find a number of techniques, ideas and skills that were new to me. Highly recommend...well
worth the price. BTW...add Dave Canterbury's BUSHCRAFT 101 book for a one, two knockout punch
to your acquired survival skills. This will give you plenty to work on if you put the information to practice.

Learn why the media fails our representative republic!!!!

Bennett offers a great insight into the manner in which the media works. The media's job is to make money for their parent companies. To that end the media needs to keep viewers watching their product. This, however, does not mean that better information will be produced by the media in order to keep people watching their product. Rather, it means they will do what they need to keep viewers regardless of whether this means that will produce better information for their viewers. For instance, they might provide more information about celebrities or entertainment. In this instance, they would be engaging in "infotainment," rather than informing the public. Bennett says all of this clearly and in a more engaging manner using many real life examples. Get it and see what the media does and why it fails us!!!

I was surprised I liked this book.

This book was required for a journalism class I'm taking. I'm glad it was or I'd never have considered reading it. I despise politics and was dreading taking this class and reading this book. I was pleasantly surprised by this author's honest and direct approach to explaining the complicated relationship between journalists and politics. I'm in my senior year of college, and this is perhaps the only one of my school books that I'll happily save to re-read again someday. This version was also cheaper than the one my university bookstore was selling; same edition but printed by a different publisher. Score.
