Lisa A. Alzo, M.F.A., is a freelance writer, instructor, and internationally recognized lecturer, specializing in Slovak/Eastern European genealogical research. Lisa is the author of nine books, including the award-winning Three Slovak Women, and hundreds of magazine articles. She has been published in Ancestry Magazine, Discovering Family History Magazine, Family Chronicle, Internet Genealogy Magazine, Family Tree Magazine, Reunions Magazine, NGS Magazine, Western Pennsylvania History Magazine, and The Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly. An Indispensable Roadmap for Researching European Immigrant Ancestors

This is the book I needed a few years ago when I started researching my German immigrant ancestors. It may not be a "German" research guide, but it’s an indispensable roadmap for anyone researching European ancestors. In fact, the title could as easily be “Trace Your Family Tree in Europe” because the essential background is useful for identifying and locating immigrants of many ethnic origins.

After an introduction to Polish, Czech & Slovak heritage in Chapter One, Alzo moves on to information that I found applicable in my search for Prussian and German ancestors. For example, Chapter 2 presents a helpful graphic process map for searching for immigrant ancestors:
From “Step 1: Establish the date of arrival for your immigrant ancestor” through “Step 7: Write to archives, churches, or registrars.” The author gives detailed examples for creating timelines and chronologies to help determine that elusive “date of arrival,” followed by charts and forms for analyzing information about collateral relatives and working with cluster research.
When you arrive at the final step and are ready to contact foreign repositories, you’ll find customizable fill-in-the-blank letters for requesting information from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

Anyone researching immigrant ancestors will find useful techniques applicable to all levels of genealogical research: using research logs, citing sources, organizing data and working with name changes and name variations. Specific sections highlight record groups of interest in immigrant research, such as immigration records, naturalization records, passport applications, newspapers, and immigrant fraternal organization records.
Genealogists with Polish, Czech or Slovak ancestors will find a useful overview of each country’s history, geography, and culture. In addition, the extensive section, “Getting to Know the Old Country,” offers a broad look at Eastern European geography maps, atlases, and gazetteers, which can be puzzling for new researchers.

I especially like the clear examples with callouts that explain the format and foreign language for records used in each country. Additional information on locating and understanding military records is featured in a separate chapter. Seasoned Eastern European researchers will find challenges in the author’s case studies and and advanced research strategies for breaking through Polish, Czech, and Slovak brickwalls. Extensive material in the book’s appendix supplement understanding for the foreign languages, and present a comprehensive listing of useful research repositories in the United States and in Europe.

When I finally do travel to the Old Country, I plan to pull out this book and review the suggestions for a successful research trip In a chapter devoted to “Heritage Travel and On-site Research.” I only wish I could take the author along as a tour guide. I've heard Lisa Alzo speak at genealogy conferences, and she has a great knack for explaining concepts clearly and directly. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a wonderful read, and visually

This book is a wonderful read, and visually, very stunning representations of a bygone era in cooking. Lots of ideas, and lots of recipes, requiring skill and diligence but nothing the committed home cook can't do (as long as he or she can obtain the ingredients - e.g., foie gras and truffles are represented heavily, and the easier things - e.g., venison, quail, pheasant, etc.).

The only disappointment - and this isn't unexpected, frankly, given the age of the book - is that the book mentions an accompanying recipe booklet, which was missing here. The recipe index at the book counts numerous recipes that are only included in the booklet, so it would have been nice and I am on the hunt. Craig Blaibourne and his collaborators, Pierre Franey and Jacques Pepin, along with many others (Julia Child, of course; Andre Soltner come immediately to mind) - heralds of a grande cuisine brought more broadly to our shores.

This book isn't the easiest thing to read, but it is definitely a lot easier than trying to read all three volumes of Capital. Trotsky takes the message of Capital and cuts it down to a manageable size. I recommend reading this if you are looking to learn about Marxism.

I’ll cut to the chase…if you plan to be or already are a hand tool woodworker or even a machine woodworker who uses hand tools here and there…buy this book by Paul Sellers. Period.
“Essential Woodworking Hand Tools“
OK, now the long story version.
Mr. Sellers’ new book is the culmination of over fifty years of experience in the implementation and teaching of hand tool woodworking captured in the written word, with photos and, my personal favorite, hand drawings by Mr. Sellers. All of that information is brought together into an almost five hundred page tome that could and should become a woodworkers reference manual on the use and care of, well, the essential woodworking hand tools.
Using his straight forward, down to earth approach, Mr. Sellers introduces each tool that he considers to be essential to the hand tool woodworker. He then explains and illustrates their use and care. If a tool has a cutting edge, he explains and illustrates how to sharpen it. All of this information is enhanced with detailed color photographs and the aforementioned hand drawings. The information is so comprehensive that I believe this book could easily be used as a textbook on the subject of woodworking hand tools.
The book is so comprehensive that I’m not even going to attempt to list what all is covered. Did I mention the book is almost five hundred pages long? What I will add is that the book is organized into clear, concise chapters as well as having an exhaustive index. This makes finding a specific tool or technique quick and easy. Did I mention the book is almost five hundred pages long?
In addition to covering the conventionally produced hand tools, Mr. Sellers also provides alternatives to many of the tools. These shop-made alternatives can act to supplement and/or bridge the gaps in a persons’ current tool collection and can be quite helpful in mitigating up-front tool costs for those just getting started.

This is an astounding book!

This is an astounding book. It is not a projects book, however, so if that is what you want buy something else. What this book offers is a crystal clear description of almost all the hand tools that most woodworkers use regularly--what to look for in choosing a tool how to maintain it and how to use it most effectively.

I did not purchase the DVD version as I had subscribed to the author's YouTube channel and watched 25 to 30 videos before buying the book. While I could be wrong, I made an assumption that the DVD contained most of the same content. Anyone who has not seen Paul Sellers' channel should seriously think about purchasing the DVD version.

This book has great information that is wonderfully written and easy to understand. The pictures are very well done - something I find a lot of similar books don't do right. This is a great book to pick up if you are wanting to learn more about hand tools and the traditional woodworking approach.

He is also Vice-Chair of ATSC Technology Group 3 (TG3), which is developing standards for the next generation of digital television. Previously he worked in multimedia for 11 years at Microsoft, served as an editor and contributor to several broadcast technology books and journals, and consulted to the professional, educational and government sectors of the media industry worldwide. He began his career as an engineer, manager and technical trainer at NPR. He is a recipient of the Audio Engineering Society’s Board of Governors Award, and a graduate of Georgetown University, where he studied Electrical Engineering, Fine Arts, and International Economics.

Graham Jones retired in 2010 from NAB, where he was a Senior Director working on advanced television issues. He is still active in ATSC, SCTE, and SMPTE standards committees. Previously he was Engineering Director for the Harris/PBS DTV Express, which introduced DTV to many U.S. broadcasters. He started his career with the BBC in London, and has worked as a consultant to broadcasters in many parts of the world. He holds a degree in physics, is a chartered electrical engineer, a fellow of SMPTE, and a life member of the SBE and the Royal Television Society. He has been honored with the Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award from the ATSC and received a citation from SMPTE for outstanding service to the society.

A superb explanation of essential concepts for a reader in good faith

Written as simply as can be, but not simplified beyond the limits of accuracy. Like any good tutorial, though, this text assumes good faith from a reader, that he or she will not simply dismiss its subject as unnecessary to understand.
