We all want to find happiness and be free from suffering. Happiness comes from positive mental states and actions and suffering from the opposite. The twelve-part process of dependent arising shows how actions underlain by ignorance propel us from one rebirth into another, keeping us trapped in suffering, and how through understanding reality correctly we can break this cycle. The twelve links that make up this chain of causes and effects are an extension of the four noble truths, the heart of the Buddha's teaching, and demonstrate in particular the connection between true suffering and true sources of suffering. This oral teaching by Geshe Sonam Rinchen is based on the Rice Seedling Sutra and the twenty-sixth chapter of Nagarjuna's Treatise on the Middle Way.

About the Author
Geshe Sonam Rinchen (1933–2013) studied at Sera Je Monastery and in 1980 received the Lharampa Geshe degree. He taught Buddhist philosophy and practice at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India, as well as in dharma centers around the world.

Disappointed

I was very disappointed with this book. With a plain, straightforward title, I had hoped the writing style would be the same. But it seems the author's goal was to shed light on Tibetan sources that dealt with karma, rather than to shed light on karma itself.

I often felt he was explaining about mandalas that symbolize karma, rather than explaining karma.

Karma is a complex topic. I don't feel I understand it any better after having wrestled with this book.

Good introduction on the twelve links of D.O.

If you are looking for a good introduction to the twelve links of dependent origination, this is a very good book. D.O. is a central concept of the Buddha's teachings.

Like many topics in Buddhism, however, one is given a list -- six of this, eight of that, etc. I often find myself asking: "what did the Buddha mean by 'form & function?'" This book tells you in plain English. I'm a big fan of Ruth Sonam's style.

While this book may not answer all of your questions about karma, if you're a beginner like me, it's a good start.

Berman, an oral historian and author (Search for Meaning, Ballantine, 1993), believes there are common themes and insights into near-death experiences (NDEs) through which we can obtain a greater appreciation of life. His collection of interviews is less comprehensive than Near Death Experience: A Reader (Routledge, 1996), but it is more thorough in underscoring common themes in NDEs. Most NDEs relate the participant's need to become closer to his or her God, to gain knowledge; individuals do not lose a fear of dying but do lose a fear of death. The transformation in the individual after the incident demonstrates that he or she has had a glimpse of a profound spiritual vision. Berman includes in this collection Howard Storm, a former art professor, whose NDE was a trip to a dark place (hell); in his despair he called to God for assistance and moved to the bright light. I have just finished reading THE JOURNEY HOME by Philip L.Berman and I want to shout from the housetops: Read this book!
A Jewish scholar has interviewed people of various (or no) religious persuasions who have had NDE...Near Death Experiences. As one who has had such an experience, I have read every book I can find on the subject, and Berman's impressed me the most, probably because he is so objective.
In a fine writing style (I truly read this book in one sitting...or I should say, lying down!...) and wept with joy when I finished it, for it offers such faith, hope and love for all of us, whatever our beliefs. The similarity of the experiences are in themselves miraculous, yet it is the differences that make them believeable.
For example, in my own NDE experience I did not look down and see my body on the hospital gurney...but that is not surprising. I have never been one to look back, and I was so enthralled with the experience I had no interest in the world I had left. Nor did I see "my life flash before me"...maybe it did, but I wasn't watching. I was so drawn to the Light, the Sounds, the aurae, the people, all I wanted to do was stay there, forever. I didn't associate this with a DNE until years later when I read of similar experiences. Truly such an experience does change your life.
Just reading Berman's book can change your life. I defy anyone to read it through and still question the existance of an afterlife. I have recommended it for hospice reading, as well as family reading. No longer will the reader fear death.

NDEs, mysticism, and theology

This is a nice book. I can't claim familiarity with the entire literature on near-death experiences, but Phillip Berman's work seems to me to stand out in several respects.

First of all, a good deal of the book is devoted simply to describing NDEs as reported by the people who had them. In preparation for this volume, Berman interviewed literally hundreds of people -- and, moreover, scoured the world's religious literature looking for further historical examples. The results are not all included here; in fact he has probably had to leave out many more than he was able to put in. But his selections are well-chosen. (For example, he devotes an entire chapter to the neglected topic of "hellish" NDEs, notably the experience of one Howard Storm.) And he spends most of his time on straightforward reporting rather than rushing to conclusions.

Second, he ties all this NDE stuff to mystical tradition and "perennial philosophy" (which he prefers to call "eternal theology"). Himself Jewish, Berman also competently discusses the mystical traditions of e.g. Christianity and Buddhism without attempting either to adjudicate among their theologies or to reduce these religions to their strictly mystical portions. His conclusion, in a nutshell, is that NDEs and mysticism teach us essentially the same things about the nature of God and reality.

Third, his conclusions are presented with thoroughness and proper caution. Berman does not attempt to minimize or paper over the genuine differences among the various types of NDE and mystical experience; he does not proclaim that his work has "finally proven" something that was hitherto only suspected and that he has thereby settled all the important questions; he deals sensitively and compassionately with the losses of loved ones (including his own) without relying in any way on maudlin sentiment at the expense of empirical reportage and theological argumentation. Generally speaking, he knows the difference between conclusions and speculations, offering some of each and claiming for his work just what it deserves. This is a sober and responsible work of theology, not an extended piece of tabloid journalism.

Fourth, his topic is precisely what his subtitle indicates: he is interested in what NDEs and mystical experiences _teach us_, not in telling us how to go about _having_ such experiences ourselves (nor even in urging the importance of having them). He has what I regard as a healthy sense (based firmly in all of the religious traditions with which he deals) that there is something unsound about seeking such experiences for oneself, and for that matter about (mis)taking the purpose of religion to be the bringing about of such experiences. This is, again, a work of theology, not a how-to handbook.

This seems to me to be a standout work, then. Again, I do not claim to have read the whole NDE literature, but of the handful of books I _have_ read, this one is unique. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in these topics.

A worthy effort, especially because it is based on statistically significant research.

I nearly died a year ago, and I have read several books with accounts of Near-Death Experiences (NDE.) This is the most objective and evidence-driven NDE book I have found. The first two-thirds of the volume present both a theoretical model of NDEs, and a number of accounts by people who have had one or more NDEs. This was the most compelling part of the book. The third part was what had led me to buy this particular treatise, because it is about mysticism. Berman believes that the mystical experience is very similar to an NDE, or to phrase it more properly, he appears to believe that NDEs are inherently mystical experiences.

The virtue is that all this material developed naturally out of over 500 interviews Berman conducted after his daughter died stillborn. A number of those he interviewed had had NDEs and a smaller number, mystical experiences. These people he interviewed more carefully, and developed the theoretical framework he presents at the beginning.

I was somewhat disappointed with his coverage of mysticism, and also skeptical about his apparently complete acceptance of not just the phenomenon of the NDE, but the reality which he believes to be the underlying cause or purpose of them. I am always skeptical of anything which purports to "prove" the existence of either God or an Afterlife, even though I am open to the possibility of both.

A worthy effort, especially because it is based on statistically significant research. My therapist recommended this book.

Heavy duty introduction to policy anaytic techniques: A Classic!

Stokey and Zeckhauser. . . . Those names have sent shivers through students of policy analysis over time. This represents a strong and rigorous introduction to major tools for policy analysis. If you successfully process this book, you will be well equipped to analyze policy.

The first section of the book comprises three chapters, providing an introduction to policy and policy analysis. The authors note at the outset (Page ix): "This is a do-it-yourself book: the more effort you put into it, the more understanding you will get out of it." Furthermore (Page 3): ". . .the emphasis in this book is on how decisions ought to be analyzed and made, rather than on the details of the information that should serve as inputs to the decision." Discussion in this section examines models and how to choose which models to use.

But the guts of the book is Part II, "Nuts and Bolts." Here, the reader is introduced to a variety of tools of policy analysis. Examples: Queues (this helps answer the question of how many ticket booths should be available at a baseball game); Simulations; benefit-cost analysis (weigh the costs and benefits of a proposal, to see if benefits outweigh costs; if not, maybe consider not taking the action); decision analysis; and so on.

Part III, "Ends and Means," reflects on such issues as the government's role when the market fails, addressing social welfare, and putting policy analysis to work.

A difficult but outstanding work. This is a major resource for the policy analyst, even though it is three decades old now.

Better Understanding Now of What Men Want

The author of this Kindle book (a man) was very transparent about what men want when they are in a relationship with a woman. Surprisingly, there's very little about sexual things, which I greatly appreciated. There are a lot of really good tips about how men want to be treated in relationships that I am sure will be very helpful. It was refreshing to read a well written Kindle book on this subject, as I desire to be all that I can be when I am in love. This book is well worth the little it costs.

Good Book About Understanding Men

This book capture my attention and aroused curiosity, so I bought it. The idea of knowing what men want in relationships with women is brilliant. I've always wanted my partner to me a mind reader and know what I want. With information like this, women can be educated as to some of the things that most men want in relationships, monogamous or not. I found the suggestions in this guide for women to be very well written and accurate. This Kindle book can serve as an excellent guide in helping women really understand what a man wants in a relationship. Think about this...most men don't really open up and share their feelings very well. The author of this book has really revealed many secret things that men desire from women.

a wonderful insight, horrible binding.

i think this book goes some ways into showing people that not only was rozz a very talented musician, but his best work was done with audial and visual arts. if you do buy this book be forewarned that it is obviously not just a few of these books that fall apart. it seems to be all of them, so if you don't want to keep re-ordering this book, then plan to spend a few dollars on rebinding it. the origonal binding seems to be some cheap foam-like glue. myself and my wife are having ours hardbound for around $60. very good investment though. if you are interested in surrealist art or the music and artistic endeavors of mr. williams this book will not in any way dissappoint.

The Book of Rozz

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wants to remember Rozz Williams, to learn more about this pioneering artist, or to understand the origins of Christian Death. The book has sections on each of Rozz's musical projects and includes pictures, lyrics, and brief background information for each era, as well as poems, mixed-media collages, and a pretty good discography that includes many imports and singles.

First I should mention... the book did fall apart upon first viewing and now everytime I look at it I have to be extremely careful and alert at how the book is being handled. However, when one gets past this sorry state of affairs regarding the fragility of the book, one can not help but be impressed by its content: photo's, artwork, gig flyers, poetry, lyrics, commentary, tour dates, release dates. Indeed Nico B has put together as complete a package of Rozz Williams brief life possible. Any fan of Rozz Williams the artist would be pleased with this book which displays the creative genius and abilities of the man impeccably

Spurred by the 1950s civil rights movement in the United States, Pauli Murray interrupted her law career for four years to investigate and document her family's history. Meticulously researched and eloquently written, Proud Shoes provides both an engrossing story of one family and an historical overview of race relations in the United States spanning almost one hundred years. Pauli Murray grew up in the South with her grandparents, Cornelia and Robert Fitzgerald, two strong-willed individuals of vastly different backgrounds. Cornelia, the child of a beautiful house slave and the master's son who drove away her lawful husband and repeatedly raped her, was brought up in a Southern household, both heir and slave. Robert grew up in the North, the sickly child of free black Thomas and his white wife Sarah Ann, who through her marriage "enlisted in a cause which called for raw courage and no retreats." Educated and brave, Robert refused to pass for white and waited impatiently until the Union allowed blacks into the military; his determination and heroism on and off the battlefield served as a constant example and a psychological shield against the racism of young Pauli's world. As Pauli Murray traces her family's history, she shows the Civil War from two sides and describes a world of North and South, pre- and post-emancipation, filled with family stories, laws, injustice, bravery, and heroes and villains of both races. What a wonderfully educational book. Civil rights didn't start in the 1950's like so many people think. It started right after the Civil War, and even before. This family is amazing.
