This book isn't the easiest thing to read, but it is definitely a lot easier than trying to read all three volumes of Capital. Trotsky takes the message of Capital and cuts it down to a manageable size. I recommend reading this if you are looking to learn about Marxism.

I’ll cut to the chase…if you plan to be or already are a hand tool woodworker or even a machine woodworker who uses hand tools here and there…buy this book by Paul Sellers. Period.
“Essential Woodworking Hand Tools“
OK, now the long story version.
Mr. Sellers’ new book is the culmination of over fifty years of experience in the implementation and teaching of hand tool woodworking captured in the written word, with photos and, my personal favorite, hand drawings by Mr. Sellers. All of that information is brought together into an almost five hundred page tome that could and should become a woodworkers reference manual on the use and care of, well, the essential woodworking hand tools.
Using his straight forward, down to earth approach, Mr. Sellers introduces each tool that he considers to be essential to the hand tool woodworker. He then explains and illustrates their use and care. If a tool has a cutting edge, he explains and illustrates how to sharpen it. All of this information is enhanced with detailed color photographs and the aforementioned hand drawings. The information is so comprehensive that I believe this book could easily be used as a textbook on the subject of woodworking hand tools.
The book is so comprehensive that I’m not even going to attempt to list what all is covered. Did I mention the book is almost five hundred pages long? What I will add is that the book is organized into clear, concise chapters as well as having an exhaustive index. This makes finding a specific tool or technique quick and easy. Did I mention the book is almost five hundred pages long?
In addition to covering the conventionally produced hand tools, Mr. Sellers also provides alternatives to many of the tools. These shop-made alternatives can act to supplement and/or bridge the gaps in a persons’ current tool collection and can be quite helpful in mitigating up-front tool costs for those just getting started.

This is an astounding book!

This is an astounding book. It is not a projects book, however, so if that is what you want buy something else. What this book offers is a crystal clear description of almost all the hand tools that most woodworkers use regularly--what to look for in choosing a tool how to maintain it and how to use it most effectively.

I did not purchase the DVD version as I had subscribed to the author's YouTube channel and watched 25 to 30 videos before buying the book. While I could be wrong, I made an assumption that the DVD contained most of the same content. Anyone who has not seen Paul Sellers' channel should seriously think about purchasing the DVD version.

This book has great information that is wonderfully written and easy to understand. The pictures are very well done - something I find a lot of similar books don't do right. This is a great book to pick up if you are wanting to learn more about hand tools and the traditional woodworking approach.

About the Author

Skip Pizzi is Senior Director of New Media Technologies at NAB, where he focuses on new methods for creation and delivery of broadcast content. He is also Vice-Chair of ATSC Technology Group 3 (TG3), which is developing standards for the next generation of digital television. Previously he worked in multimedia for 11 years at Microsoft, served as an editor and contributor to several broadcast technology books and journals, and consulted to the professional, educational and government sectors of the media industry worldwide. He began his career as an engineer, manager and technical trainer at NPR. He is a recipient of the Audio Engineering Society’s Board of Governors Award, and a graduate of Georgetown University, where he studied Electrical Engineering, Fine Arts, and International Economics.

Graham Jones retired in 2010 from NAB, where he was a Senior Director working on advanced television issues. He is still active in ATSC, SCTE, and SMPTE standards committees. Previously he was Engineering Director for the Harris/PBS DTV Express, which introduced DTV to many U.S. broadcasters. He started his career with the BBC in London, and has worked as a consultant to broadcasters in many parts of the world. He holds a degree in physics, is a chartered electrical engineer, a fellow of SMPTE, and a life member of the SBE and the Royal Television Society. He has been honored with the Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award from the ATSC and received a citation from SMPTE for outstanding service to the society.

A superb explanation of essential concepts for a reader in good faith

Written as simply as can be, but not simplified beyond the limits of accuracy. Like any good tutorial, though, this text assumes good faith from a reader, that he or she will not simply dismiss its subject as unnecessary to understand.

It not very easy book but for the people wanted enrich the knowledge about should find it positive. Each chapter talks about possible impact of PNI on the one field of medicine. Stress, oncology, AIDS are the main topics in this book. Every chapter has a rich references section so everybody who wants to "dig in" deeper in the particular field has good starting point. I recommend this book for the physiscians, psychologists, immunologists and people working on the frontier of the PNI - it very good update.

Cappadocia, a province in central Turkey, offers the traveler a startling rockscape whose cones, pleats, and folds conceal hundreds of monasteries and churches carved from the soft, porous "tuff" and used by Christian communities over nearly two millennia for shelter, burial, and sanctuary. This region in the Turkish hinterland is recognized as one of the centers of Byzantine mural painting. However, numerous hermitages, monasteries, and independent chapels dating from the seventh century onward reveal it also as one of the most concentrated areas of Eastern monasticism.

This book serves a double purpose: it provides a thorough and lucid introduction to the rockcut churches and monasteries and their painted decorations, while it critically examines current scholarship on the monastic environment of Byzantine Cappadocia -- particularly in regard to the architecture, which has been generally neglected by art historians.

Scooped out rather than constructed, this anonymous architecture has its own unique appeal. Kostof writes: "The Cappadocian carver-architect was not inhibited... by statics or the nature of materials. His structure stood, a monolith, before he started to work on it. And he could cut into this monolith quickly, effortlessly. It might take a single man about a month to carve out a large room of two to three thousand cubic feet. Loads and thrusts were negligible. One was free to try any structural symbol with little concern for structural safety. Cupolas could bubble from flat ceilings, or be placed over square bays by means of the most cavalier transition elemenis. No shape need be perfect: extemporaneous geometry is everywhere the rule. Wall lines sag, one half of an arch doesn't quite match the other, carefree deviations, here and there, mark the general outline of the building.

Following an account of the region, its environmental, political, and religious history, the author discusses in detail the building types and painting programs in the context of their creation--answering such questions as what was the nature of monasticism in Cappadocia, and who were the builders, the artists, their patrons? The author was born and educated in Turkey, and his personal knowledge of the monuments is a convincing factor in his handling of chronological and stylistic uncertainties. Throughout, Kostof's mind's eye never leaves the total environment, observing the inseparability of landscape, buildings, paintings, and the ritual that informs them.

In Cappadocia, a bleak and relatively barren section of south central Turkey, nature has provided a moonscape environment replenished with a wild and at times bizarre array of rock formation. It was in this remote, forbidding area that Byzantine monks from approximately 500 through 1200 A.D. created a strange, unreal world of rock-cut hermitages, monasteries, and churches. Kostof's study is comprehensive. It presents a catalog of the major rock-cut buildings and then painstakingly examines their architectural styles and the numerous styles of mural paintings that cover many of their walls and ceilings... the book beautifully conjures up a sense and a feel for the place, its man-made artifacts, and the beliefs of the men who lived there. The excellent, very enjoyable text is supplemented by many... black-and-white plates, and revealing line drawings of plans, elevations, and cross sections.

A haunting book about a... remote architectural and topographical marvel. In a lunar, rocky region of central Turkey, visited by Saint Paul and converted early to Christianity, churches and monasteries were carved directly into the soft cliffs. The rockscape itself is eerie: there are photographs of strangely folded white hills and free-standing cone like formations eaten away by wind, with residues of harder rock perched on their summits like hats. The anonymous architecture hollowed out inside the slopes dates from the seventh century; itis fantastically resourceful in its response to a peculiar environment. In their chaste, no-nonsense design, MIT's books are consistently handsome, and this one is particularly so.
